White Stout is the ultimate beer in our "White Range". While the word "stout" has come to mean a dark beer, the original meaning was strong and true. Before the porter brewers commandeered the word to mean a stout, or strong, porter it referred to any strong beer. We have rehabilitated and improved the genre. White Stout is a very pale, full bodied, strong beer. American columbus hops are used throughout to give massive floral and resinous character. At a strength of 7.2% this is a true stout. Indeed, few modern stouts of any colour are true to the word for strong.

Bottle from Great Grog. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Steady carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of pear, apricot and grass. Flavour of sweet grain, earthy hops and orange peel. Thin to medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Not one I’d seek out again in a hurry.

Slightly opaque golden colour. Small head which disappears quickly. Smooth tasting initially with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Hop flavours and aroma. Overall, this is pretty good.

Bottle. A very interesting label, a white stout... This should be interesting. It pours a hazy darker golden beer with a good amount of white head on top. Aroma is pretty malt forward, not roasty or toasty in any way, but hints of sweeter caramel and some white fruits. Flavor is moderately sweet, fruity and has some dark fruit notes. Not sure when the stout influences will kick as I know it. Full bodied, long flavored and well balanced. Interesting take, interesting style...

A White Stout left me contemplating a black, roasted malt beer encapsulated in essence in a pale ale, like some modern El Bulli cuisine trickery; but it weren’t to be!!...Low pffft and off comes the cap. Into a tulip at just on cool. Medium, compact white head atop a deep yellow body that shimmers when held to the lights. A rather English fruit mince mix of orange marmalade and bitter orange peel, apricot, peach and a hint of ripe plums tickles the nose - all things stonefruit in here. Bitter, sweet orange - peel, pith and flesh dominate this one. Heat suggesting fusels lap the finish. It is slightly vinous and sightly tart with a leafy, grapeskin astringency on the swallow. Loads of pale stonefruit make it quite palatable. The body quite lean but not sessionable. The carbonation quite soft aiding its fruit wine quality. Lastingly bitter and rounded. It grew on me...., but not a ’Stout’ given the history of dark malts and the introduction of pale kilned malts well after this style was the norm! (50cL, BBE 04/17, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bottle at home split with Sarah from Beer Hawk. Slight hazed golden orange coloured pour with a lasting fluffy white head. Aroma is slightly alcohol solvent, jammy fruit, grainy, grape, grain husks. Flavour is composed of strawberry jam, grape, grain husks, fruity esters, passion fruit. Not sure if this is a stout really. Palate is semi-sweet, moderate carbonation, medium bodied. Bit of a weird one. quite sweet.

I have re-written this review after drinking more of the beer and considering it carefully. It is not good, but more than that, it describes itself as something unique and impressive and then doesn’t deliver at all. It is disappointingly thin, overpoweringly bitter and with the only discernible flavours being flat lager and a fair acrid fruitiness reminiscent of air freshener. In the world we live in; with the wealth of delicious strong beers available, the condescending tone and pretentious tasting notes on this are an insult.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2016 Not sure what to think of this. Obviously this is not a Stout to any modern definition. I would compare this to a double IPA. Aromas hoppy and citrus as expected. This tastes every bit of its 7.2 ABV and a thin body is supplemented by a meths like alcoholic taste. The meths lingers along with a rather unpleasant icing sugar bite. Pretty unpleasant experience- sorry Alex! x
