Aroma of wheat and caramel. Pours a brilliant gold with a thick white head. Tastes of honey and wheat. For a fairly strong beer the alcohol taste is minimal. Brilliant.

How can you rate this as anything but near perfect? A few points docked just in case there is the potential to better this beer in the style, but I think thatd only be by adding brett to a similar beer. Great.

Obviously a classic for many good reasons. If you like bitterness, the mighty Duvel is a great choice, it might seem unsurprising when you experienced a lot of other exotic beers, but still, whats bad to say about it? High alcohol level, strong character, it maybe lacks a deeper aftertaste to me, only reason why I rate it a bit lower than the classics Chimay for example... Still a great beer to have for any occasion. APPROVED BY TAVERNYS BLACK METAL CREW!

Oh boy, what to say about this beauty? This beer is easy to find in any European supermarket (at least here in the Netherlands). At 1.30 a bottle, it is also quite inexpensive, especially considering the quality that lingers inside this fairly inconspicious bottle. This makes it one of the "hidden gems" available in the rack, especially in the price range, which tends to include a range of "quite good" to "downright mediocre" and, if one is uninformed, downright miserable ales. Often hidden in the corner or at the lower shelves, this is definitely not the most attractive of bottles, but this overt diamond might easily be the best pick in the rack, especially when (strong) golden ales are your thing, and it easily outshines quite a few, if not most 3 beers with its sheer quality. Pours a hazy golden colour with an intimidating clear-white head of light and frothy foam. Aroma is very subtle, a perfect balance of Belgium yeast, banana, some grapefruit sour and malts. Mouthfeel is light and easy-drinkable but not cheap or watery. Strong carbonation. Taste is quite up front at first; sweet malts, heavy spices and yeasty flavor. The alcohol is definitely present in the flavour, albeit a pleasant touch, never giving off a burn or any other negative traits often found with a strong booziness. The finish is dry, with a bitterness that tickless the jower jaw, giving way to an aftertaste of spices, malts and a faint sweetness and hop flavours. Overall, I think this is one of THE embodiments of a Belgian Strong Ale. Its price, as well as the modest-looking bottle and wide availability make it overlooked and underestimated (where Im from at least), often considered "that beer that we had when we first started out". Still, having tasted 400+ Belgian Ales in all forms and varieties in 10 years time, this one still has a rock-solid place in my top 10 beers of all-time. A world class brew without a doubt.

SonOfAnarchy (227) - ST HELENA - JAN 3, 2017
Cloudy golden body, persistent white head. Aroma of fresh green apple, banana, white fruit, and some alcohol in the background. Taste is yeasty like a Belgian beer should be. Apart from that, theres plenty of flavors of white fruit, malt, slight citrusy flavors, and banana. Intense and gut-warming alcohol. High body, thick texture, average carbonation.
