(Draft: E.J. Phair Alehouse in Concord, CA) Some wild claims on the beer menu for this beer, so let’s see if it lives up. For a beer with "very little hop flavor", it sure has a decent hop bitterness, especially in the finish. But on the whole, this is a very sweet, very caramely beer, and if less bitter would be pushing a Scotch ale. The sweetness is a bit too sugary for me. Moderate alcohol presence is a bit of a distraction in the finish. Sweet and very caramely nose, with a stronger than expected aroma of alcohol. Sweet and heavy on the palate, the bitter bite doesn’t really cut into the thickness. Deep ruddy amber color, with a full haze for a very murky appearance. Not a whole lot of head when poured, it was light tan in color and quickly faded to a bubbly thin ring. Some droopy lacing near the top of the glass. Contrary to what the menu insists, this is not even close to being "one of the best experiences in malt" in my life, but it is a decent beer. But in the end, the beer has a slight harshness, and thus is not something I could drink much of, so I don’t know how "approachable" this really is. aspidites (1271) - manteca, California, USA - MAR 14, 2005

A creative monster weighing in at around 7.5 ABV. Lots of aroma -- citric notes in the tangerine, tangelo range, some distinct cola aroma, roasty, bready, and a snappy tang. Mild cocoa and molasses flavors as well as some fruit esters. This is definitely a beer for real beer drinkers.
