Dark red body with a fine bubbled white head. It’s much more malt-driven than hop-driven, heavy on the red apple notes and grape and with a soft pepper spiciness. This is a single-hop Southern Cross IPA but there’s little hop aroma so it’s kind of a wasted presentation of the hop. Grape jam flavor, some generic spice mix, juniper berries, dough... medium body, semi-sweet, medium bitterness, soft body, low carbonation. Simple smell and taste, little distinct hop character. From bottle.

The head is ok, the body gold-brown. It smells hopp, dry-strange The taste is hoppy, aromatic, malty, dry. In the aftertaste dry-barley-strange. Overall ok and interesting DylansDad (670) - North Shore, Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 30, 2013
Aroma is a typical English bitter with typical English hops. Apparently, one parent of the Sthn Cross is Fuggle. Taste and smell make this newly googled fact quite unsurprising, but it is not what I was hoping for. Starts like a bitter, finishes like an amber - sticky and slightly spicy. Undercarbonated and underwhelming hop-wise. Will try again in case I had a dud bottle. I really want to like this. beer-yum (1950) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 8, 2013
UPDATED: NOV 26, 2016 A good mix of the simple (single hop) and balanced (IPA). Nothing exceptional but no faults either. An enjoyable brew - albeit a little stronger than usual/expected of the style. lisagirl (264) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - APR 2, 2013
from memory, had on tap. the new zealand hops came in quite hard...perhaps it’s the variety, but the bitterness flavour didn’t do much for me. wasn’t too bad though.

Tasted off tap at the Great New Zealand Beer Festival, this beer is a showcase of the Southern Cross hop and sits on the cusp of Imperial status, so that’s how I’ve categorised it.
It appeared a clear golden amber with a good finger of head. A pretty beer. Aroma suggests glace fruit peel, seville orange marmalade, mace, nutmeg and cake. There are beautiful golden syrupy flavours that serve to emphasise the fruit. Medium bodied with good carbonation and sooner than I can write this there is a bloody great smack of bitterness. Pow! Ooh you saucy thing, you. More flavours of apple peelings and golden apricot pastries. The beer was sweet at first and then nicely balanced. Golden and gorgeous. Like me.
