Cask at Paisley Beer Festival 2008 ... copper ... fruity nose ... decent malt character ... rounded ... little hop in linger chriso (7536) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 8, 2003
This beer is invariably described by CAMRA and others as overwhelmingly hoppy. Indeed I remember having a pint at the Victoria at Earl Soham a few years ago (and before I started writing tasting notes) that was a strange beast indeed - fruit and astringency in equal measure. However, I think the hops must have been toned down a bit. Certainly starts fruity and has plenty of balancing hops, but nothing overwhelming. In fact, a rather well balanced best bitter. Chelmsford Beer Festival. Opaque dark brown beer. Light suddy tan head. A very dark bitter! Light semi dry palate. Rich malt - nice! Has a little dark malt character as well. Trace of chocolate. Fresh mild hops underneath. Mild minerals. Smooth semi dry palate. Mild bitter aftertaste. Well joined up.
Cask at The Craft Beer Co. Deep refractive ruby-amber, large frothy beige head. Classic ESB aroma - floral, sweet, mild alcohol but somewhat more herbal than standard. Taste follows, floral/sweet but nicely balanced. Light, slick mouthfeel, finishes sweet and quickly. Dare I say .... quaffable?

A Mes rate:
Cask at the Wenlock Arms. Sweetish aroma. Red brown with very little head. Tart and sweet with plenty of caramel notes. Unexpected bitter hop finish. Slightly unusual but good. Spiesy (2337) - Sydney, Greater London, AUSTRALIA - JUL 1, 2004
Bottled. Deep amber colour with a well form, smooth a shinny white head. Some hops on the nose. More malt than hops in the flavour (only just). Moderately pleasant beer. Thanks to Chris_o for leaving this one behind. YogiBeera (2569) - New Jersey, USA - FEB 5, 2006
Thanks a lot Chris_o! Nice hazy copper color with a fizzy head. Light malt nose. Light malt and toffee taste that improves as it warms up. leaparsons (10859) - Wigston, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - MAY 24, 2007
Cask, Leicester Fest 07. Amber brown with a small head. Aromas are toffee malts with spices and pine. Flavours are sweet toffee with quite a degree of fruit. Soft malts with some biscuit. Some herbal notes. A well balanced bitter. harrisoni (19534) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - AUG 3, 2007
Cask handpull at Victoria, Earl Soham. Chestnut, lasting beige head. Excellent condition. Strong hop and rich brown sugar malt aroma. Smooth in mouth, and then a big burst of hop on the finish. Really peppery. Decent best bitter, with a very heavy hop finish for an English beer. Malts are toffeeish.
