Big Hop IPA – the first of the brews from Pittsburgh’s newest and MICRO-est microbrewery to hit the streets. Truly, a hopped-up American IPA with loads of Centennial and Cascade hops, and just barely enough malt backbone to balance it out. Our flagship brew.

On tap, pours a hazy copper color, with small white head, and lace that didn’t really last. Aromas of citrus, wood, bannana, sweet malt, and other slightly wet or stale aromas.Taste is better with nutty malts, pepper, centennial hops, and some smokey ash coming through. Medium bodied. Pleasant aftertaste. Decent beer just lacking in aroma.

Tap at mane liquor. Great Orange/lemon citrus aroma, which is really brought to life with the first mouthful. Mild bitterness that finishes well with all the citrus flavour combined with its light carbonation make this IPA a great easy drinking beer for any occasion.

4oz taster at the Pittsburgh public market. Pours a deep orange with one finger of rocky, lacing head. Nice nose, big up front, citrus fruits, light line, a little perfume. Very straight forward but not aggressive. Flavor is similar, sweet, lightly bitter, actually less bitter than the nose would indicate, lemon, orange zest, light pine, some caramel. Medium bodied, lightly bitter, refreshing finish.

Tap at Mane Liquor. Pours perfect orange with a small, firm white head. Looks amazing. Nose is very appealing. Citrus, pine and grapefruit. Everything you would expect in an IPA. Taste takes it a little further with light lemon/orange, pine through the middle, and a bitter grapefruit finish. Soft carbonation helps it flow well. Very nice IPA

Tap. Finger plus of light tan head, darker bright coppery orange. Slight citrus and pine for the hops but seem a bit stale and dusty. Citrus hos with some slight cracker and overly malted notes. Medium body with lively carbonation. Eh, can’t help but think this isn’t all that fresh. Need to retry.

Draft. The name says it all. This one has all you’d expect in appearance, palate, and scent from an IPA, but the taste stands out. After the hay hop bomb explosion up front, there’s a brown, malty kick to finish it out.

lamas (1655) - Washington DC, USA - FEB 15, 2012
Draft at Barley’s and Hop’s, Bethel Park, PA on 02/11/12. Poured a murky copper color with a thick beige head. The aroma consisted of a decent amount of caramel maltiness, light biscuity qualities, some grapefruits, and a little pine. Went down medium-bodied with no real surprises taste-wise. Caramel and biscuity flavors were present upfront. Bittering citrus fruits and rinds were noticeable at the end. A touch of harsh rye here and there. A splash of sour lemon in the finish. I would’ve thought that a brewery’s flagship beer should’ve been more memorable.

On keg at the Craft Beer Co. Pours a slightly cloudy golden colour with a decent white head. Lovely hoppy aroma of pine, passion fruit, pineapple and caramel. Similar flavours. Nice and bitter with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Alcohol is well balanced. Nice.
