COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Hop IPA the first of the brews from Pittsburghs newest and MICRO-est microbrewery to hit the streets. Truly, a hopped-up American IPA with loads of Centennial and Cascade hops, and just barely enough malt backbone to balance it out. Our flagship brew.

Enjoyed via draft. Probably the best beer from East End. Nose is dominated by American hops. I noticed some complexity in terms of hop flavor, but not as much as the best examples of the style. I would have liked to see a little more hop flavor on the back end, along with slightly more malt complexity. Not outstanding, not awful.

On tap at Sharp Edge - Pittsburgh, PA. Pours a heavily hazed peachy-orange, with a soft silky white rim. Nice juicy hop aroma, with a little candied orange and some canned pineapple juice. Flavors heads a little downhill, with a rash bitterness and some slight buttery isovaleric. A touch coarse and biting, with some weird fruitiness that may come from the yeast or other weird off-flavors. Not my favorite. A bit overly sugary.

On tap at The Map Room. Pretty orange with a small white head. Nose is tea-like, sugary, with minor bitterness and fruit. Flavor is similar, a little grain and bitterness showing but not much fresh hop. Not innovative or memorable, its still a nice one.

Courtesy of Juart from a growler. Pours dark amber orange color with an off white khaki colored head. Aroma of sticky citrus brown sugar with a slight floral apricot or mango. The bitter is huge in this. A little grainy with some fruity character. A slight butterscotch background. I must say that it is slightly unbalanced. Body is medium, but solid. A little roasty-ness to it as well.

Growler pour courtesy of Nate. Pours Orange with ruby and amber hints and a frothy, off-white head. Nose of grassy, citrusy, piny hops with some mint present. Body is medium watery, with a solid caramel backbone and slight chocolate notes. Moderate bitter with citrus and piny hops, lemon and grapefruit. Dry finish with mild resiny character. Such a solid IPA, especially fresh.

Draft at Sharp Edge. Textbook IPA. Pours a lovely orange with a dense and thin white head. Aroma is everything you would hope for, grassy, citrusy, hoppy, minty. Body follows with similar flavors, little to no harshness or alcohol and a an off-dry finish. Goes down smooth. Best IPA in Pittsburgh, underrated.

A normal IPA, nothing to write home about, but not horrible either. Has some hops but they arent that acidic, smooth and drinkable.

Draft at capones. Pours a golden orange body with a thin white lacing. Sweet and then fruity with grapefruit, pine, and citrus. A clean hoppy finish, decent brew.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2008 draft- cleanser like hop flavor that is a bit puckering, along with a strange wild belgian yeast thing going on. Would not go to again. Editors note: communicated with the brewer who expressed concern that the place I had the brew may have had an old keg or had not properly cleaned their tap lines. Judging by solid reviews below, this may be true. Will re-rate and give another chance. This may have been an isolated incident.

Draft @ Hop House - Pittsburgh. Cloudy orange color wit a sticky lacing head. Malt sweetness in the aroma with some fruity hops also. Flavor begins a nice mixture of malt and hops, then leads to a burst of hop bitterness and resinous finish. A pleasant surprise.
