Quite simply the best beer I have ever had. Just right mix of bourbon character, perfect pour and head I haven’t seen replicated. Thank the beer gods that Scott has decided to do another batch, a be in line to get a taste. puzzl (3264) - New York, New York, USA - MAR 15, 2009
Bottle shared by Notalush. Super dry, ashy, smoky aroma, some wood/mahogany notes. Big, bad, bitter and bold flavor, tons of malt bitterness with no barrel character at all. Smoky, dry and wonderful, this is a fantastic stout. With no sweetness at all, I would absolutely love to see more stouts done like this. after4ever (8025) - Mukilteo, Washington, USA - JUN 28, 2009
1L swingtop. Thanks so much, Riverside! Wow, this was a jammin basic stout. Jet black with a thick, surging burnt orange/tan head. Big burny roasty nose. Chocolate and prune there as well. Creamy medium body. Toast, roast, chocolate, and oak on the mid-palate. Long roasty finish. A basic beer done very well by complicating it a bit. Awesome. Review moved from its original location. Batch #1 from Halloween 2008 Reviewed 10/31/08. No bottles from this release.
A- This is a great cask conditioned ale so naturally it had the perfect appearance for its style. Body is an opaque jet black with a billowing frothy dark brown head. Head eventually settles to 1 finger, has perfect retention, and leaves lacing all the way down the glass.
S- Mild smell of dark chocolate malt, oak, and a bit of roasted bitterness. Decent-but not the strength of this brew.
T- Very malty. Roasted chocolate malt and some coffee tones come through first with a big accent of oak flavors. The flavors intensify for the finish with a hint of bourbon sweetness. Hints of roasted malt linger on the palate.
P-Mouthfeel is wonderful on this one. Low carbonation and heavy, yet eversmooth body.
O- This is a great beer-especially considering that its just a test run. I would have liked a bit more bourbon presence, but the oak is definitely there and that’s great. No hop presence this one (as compared to the regular, while fresh) but definitely much smoother. Looking forward to a new batch of this in the future (and the growler I bought to split with my dad-blackstrap is his favorite beer on earth...so I had to get one for him).

Thanks to sirpsycho for this - I shared this with a bunch of people, and opinion was quite divided, but I loved this stuff - pours black, with a thick, frothy tan lace - aroma of roast, very light oak, and some very subtle smoke - very creamy mouthfeel, medium body - moderate carbonation - the oak and bourbon is very subtle, adding a nice oaky complexity that lends itself well to the roastiness of the base beer - quite dry, with a bit of vanilla and espresso on the back end - very restrained for a bourbon-aged beer, and quite tasty because of it.

Time to catch up before BCTC. Bottle shared by someone at Spuyten Duyvil big beer fest. Thanks! Black with brown head and alce. Coffee and wood aroma. Coffee wood chocolate dark fruit and dry finish. Excellent. HopTsing (575) - Sandston, Virginia, USA - JUN 9, 2013
From the bottle poured a black hole dark brew with a dark brown head. Aromas of malt and hops. Full bodied with flavors of coffee, and earth. Gamin (459) - Brockport, New York, USA - FEB 14, 2014
Wood, vanilla, and booze in the aroma. Surprisingly smooth to drink though. I really like it, particularly this cask pour! Beerman6686 (6611) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 1, 2008
On cask at Pipers Pub. Poured a pitch black color with a pretty dark tan head. Aroma is of really burnt malts, like the original, but with nice smooth notes of oak and bourbon. Flavor was a bit suprising to me. Not completely overwhelmed with the bourbon flavor like alot of these are, just silky smooth with the deep roastedness and also detected were a few chocolate and smokey hints as well. Only thing lacking is a little weakness in the body.
