Sampled at the ’09 RBPTE, courtesy of EastEndBrewing. Black Strap with La Prima coffee - what more could one ask for? Smoke, licorice, coffee, and vanilla in the nose with molasses and roasted malt. Dark black clear with brownish-black thin creamy head. Full oily body with soft carbonation. Nice match of moderate sweetness and bitterness with great coffee flavor. Smooth overall and a nice coffee stout. cheap (5965) - Beaver Valley, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 15, 2009
Had this one at the RB Pittsburgh tasting thanks to Scott of East End Brewing, 8/2009. From a cask. Quite clean coffee aroma. Very strong black coffe flavors that are right on, somebody get me some creamer! We-ew, lots of coffee but you can still tell it has a black strap base. First its coffee then its morphs to balck strap. Staining my glass! If you like coffee stouts you better get to this before its all gone. One of the better coffee beers I’ve tasted. Too many are over the top in alky but this one seems to be just right. Reminds me of the whisky coffe grandma use to make for grampa after a hard day at the aliquippa shoemaker shop. All I can say is Scott is the beerman of Pgh, fer sure. Beerman6686 (6607) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 13, 2009
This poured a very very dark brown with a tan head. Aroma was just a huge punch in the face of stronf extremly fresh espresso, the best smelling coffee stout ive ever smelt. Flavor was a bit more subdued than the aroma nice really roasted flavor of the blackstrap compounded with a fresh strong dark coffee flavor with some nice hop bitterness in there as well. This stuff really is a breakfast stout. FROTHINGSLOSH (7944) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 12, 2009
UPDATED: AUG 14, 2009 Experimental coffee brews and ratebeer gatherings do so go together. Sampled on draft this beer poured a thick black color with a small dark brown head. The aroma was strong with dry coffee and roasty malts. The flavor was strongly roasty and bitter with strong espresso, light vanilla and a toasty undertone. The finish was long, dry and bitter and full of coffee. A bit drier than I tend to go for but the coffee was excellently featured. Well done. Had this one at the RB Pittsburgh tasting. I’m such a homer. Black Strap Stout plus Coffee has my name all over it, shame this is likely going to be the only time it will be brewed. Coffee in the scent is just right on, though I would have preferred a little less coffee and a little more sweetness and molasses on the taste. Very good and has me looking forward to the reason for this experimental brew, a test run for the Big Pour beer, a coffee infused porter, yet to be named.
