One of my favorite beers. It has a flavor that is distinct among amber ales. The hops level is just right, and does not become overpowering if you're eating while enjoying this brew. It has a lovely deep caramel color. CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - DEC 15, 2003
Pours a clear dark copper with a small off-white head. Light caramel malt and plenty of hops fill the aroma. Body is lightly sweet and full of western hops. Finishes dry and crisp with nice hop flavor. I wouldn't really consider this a brown ale, more of an amber mixed with an IPA. howie (549) - DeForest, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 15, 2003
UPDATED: APR 5, 2004 Gets points for being far superior to other insipid American beers calling themselves "Amber Ales". This one is nicely bittered, with refreshing American hop aroma. Gingerbready malt. Great session beer. JCW (1278) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 5, 2003
Reddish brown color, translusent. Carmel and pine aroma. Flavor is balanced, I think taste some spice too, pepper maybe, anyway its a well balanced enjoyable beer. Thanks Jazz88! JFGrind (2043) - Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 8, 2003
Tried the "Poppy" on draft at the North Star in North Beach SFO. Crisp Amber with a bit of bitterness. Beer had a thin head but a great amber color and fine taste. Definitely a West Coast style Amber Ale.

the aroma invited me in so much I almost inhaled this beer through my nose. very clean and refreshing. Malts and hops balance very well. Lacks a bit in flavor but still very good. herbjones (742) - Orange, California, USA - APR 19, 2003
Dark amber bordering on chestnut brown. Decent head retention. Very nutty/malty aroma. Wow! Full bodied with a lush mouthfeel. Very full malty flavor with enough bitterness to cut the sweetness perfectly. Very enjoyable brew. jazz88 (2677) - San Francisco, California, USA - JAN 30, 2003
Tap. Malty and smooth with some caramel. An amber brown color with a laced tan head. Beerhound (16) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 22, 2003
Had this on tap while vacationing in San Francisco. Nice amber color, weak head. Malt aroma very evident, whiff of Cascade hops. Very decent malt taste, nice bitterness from the hops. Great drinking beer. sarie99 (50) - San Francisco, Alabama, USA - JAN 12, 2003
Malty aroma and flavor with some bitterness. Fairly crisp and clean.
