UPDATED: AUG 17, 2013 Bottled 22/06/13. A black headless beer. Dry and burnt in the mouth. Smoky nose. No massive depth of flavour. It’s a plain dry roasty stout. Score 3.2

Dark brown coloured body with a three centimetre tall light brown head that fades fast to just a small coating on top. Aroma of roasted malt, smoked peat, lactose, cream, oak and a good deal of vanilla pods. Medium-bodied; Very dry, roasty flavour with the earth, nuts and malt all coming through, with a touch of a vanilla and oak flavour along with a lot of lactose and cream flavours. Aftertaste very dry, with smoked peat notes, grain, oatmeal, a hint of sugars and just an overall malty feel throughout. Overall, a decent dry stout that shows well and has the characteristics of those from the Carribean and certain parts of Africa, which is nice and good to try for those who haven’t had beers from those locales or can’t get dry stouts too often. Bottled. More or less pitch black colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is coffee, mild roasted notes along with chocolate and some hops. 330 ml bottle into pint glass, best before 7/2016. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense brown head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with solid balance of dark/roasted malt, earthy hop, and yeast ester notes; with decent strength. A bit too fruity on the nose, but not bad. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, light fruitiness, and roast/yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of roasted/earthy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt and earthy hop flavor; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Very restrained amount of yeast character in the flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Light-moderate dryness on the finish. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very solid dry stout style. Good balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, light vanilla, espresso, and light roasted grain. It pours a dark brown with a faint orange glow around the edges of the glass. It has a small beige head that quickly settles to a minimal film outlined by a thicker ring. There is minimal lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with light dark chocolate with just a touch of fruit. The finish has some light roasted grains, coffee, a touch of burnt flavors, and tart fruit. Pours deep black with a really huge frothy brownish head. Smell has lots of coffee and some sweet chocolate. Starts with sourish roasty malts, chocolate and some yeast. Finish is yeasty-sourish, slight roasty with a hint of chocolate.
Se si eccettua la dovuta ammirazione per aver scelto nel nome di omaggiare questo stupendo genere musicale, si tratta di una stout molto classica. Corpo leggero e poco denso, tostatura senza eccezionalità aromatiche di sorta. Molto bevebile.
