COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Much like the "sweet light crude oil" from the eastern plains of Colorado this beer pours a deep black with a tantalizing off-white head. Aromatics of sweet malt and bourbon envelope the nose like the sunset of the eastern plains. The malt profile continues through the palate from beginning to end with subtle hints of chocolate, coffee, and of course bourbon. This is a true beer for the malt and bourbon lovers alike.

Bottle. This is a sweet and bourbon-y stout. If that is your game than this is one to seek out. For me this is a solid stout but should be pared with other sweets or it will throw everything out of whack.

So if you know Colorado, you know that Poncha Springs is in East Bumf*ck (actually its not far from Salida, which has some of the prettiest Victorians in CO). This is one of the best black beers that they make in this state and thats saying a lot given Call to Arms, Bull & Bush, Avery, etc.

750ml corked bottle, 2013 vintage. Rich roasted malt aroma with nice chocolate, vanilla and bourbon notes. Pours black with a thin light brown head with little retention and lacing. Starts with rich and sweet chocolate malt with a bit of roasted malt. Finishes very smooth with a thick mouthfeel and rich body with excellent bourbon and vanilla flavors on the back end. Very nice bourbon stout.

750 ml, corked and caged bottle. Bottled 12/10/15. Opaque, thin tan head, thin lace.
Aroma is dark roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, prune. Bourbon is hiding in the background with the oak.
Flavor is sweet and milky up front, followed by light chocolate, smoke, coffee. Bourbon is there in small doses, mostly butterscotch and caramel.
Too sweet and not enough bourbon character. ABV is well hidden, so, bonus points for that.

750 ml bottle. Blackish with a big tan head that has good retention. The aroma is medium in strength with chocolate malts, vanilla and whiskey. The taste is a bit too sweet with milk chocolate, mocha, saccharine, and vanilla. Perhaps a trace of whiskey on the back end, but that is mostly an aromatic. The palate is full and creamy. Finishes long and sweet. Overall: I was expecting this to be a bit m boozy, but it wasnt. So, well done there. Sweetness and a lack of complexity keep this from being a 4.0 beer. None the less its a decent RIS at a decent price($13.00) and that makes it a good value.
