Elysian 12 Beers of Apocalypse # 4 - Peste Chocolate Chili Ale

RATINGS: 95   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.22/5   SEASONAL: Series   EST. CALORIES: 225   ABV: 7.5%
12 Beers of the Apocalypse #4. Peste Chocolate Chili Ale will plague you with the rich flavors of cocoa, chilies, and cinnamon in a beer of 7.5% ABV. A blend of Peruvian cocoa, Ceylon cinnamon, and chipotle, guajillo, pasilla, and cayenne peppers make this beer a unique distraction from the approaching end of the world as we know it. Brewed with Pale, Munich, C-77 Crystal, and Chocolate malts with roasted flaked barley, and nominally bittered with Magnum, this is the fourth of our 12 Beers of the Apocolypse heralding the winding down of the Mayan calendar.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Noam. Black, opaque, no head. Burnt, some pepper, smokey aroma. Bitter, hot, faint old chocolate taste. Very hot finish, sleek, no carbonation. Long finish. Interesting.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Dagan. Murky brown with a tiny bit of bubbly brown foam that disappears immediately. Aroma of coffee, chili, cardamon, cinnamon and more spices. Flavor of coffee, a bit of cocoa, lots of spices and a very hot chili finish. Medium-bodied. Too hot.

Black in color. Head descipated rather quickly. Poor lacing. Chocolate aroma with some pepper notes. Alcohol also noticeable in the aroma. Smokey aroma. There is a definite spicyness to the taste. Not as much chocolate flavor as I was hoping. There is a long spicey finish which I love. Medium-bodied beer with average carbonation. This beer reminds me of Texas ranger. I loved it . Drink it all night long.

Looks and smells amazing. The kick from the peppers is enough to require tums. Taste is ok. The chili is just too much

Bomber. Pours opaque black with a medium collapsing beige head; after it falls it leaves nothing but a faint ring of foam. Aroma is bready, chocolatey, cinnamon--not getting any peppers. The peppers definitely come through in the taste--it’s pretty spicy. Also, the cocoa and cinnamon are really prominent. It starts out sweet and spicy before turning bitter; the spiciness lingers long after the swallow, making my lips, tongue and throat tingle with heat. Mouthfeel is creamy and slightly watery and the body is medium. I dig it. Cool artwork, too.

Wow. Strange, weird, unique! Pours black with no carbonation whatsoever. Aroma is chocolately & slightly peppery. The taste is a tail of 2 worlds. Up front it’s velvetty chocolate & smooth. The fInish is hot & peppery. Crazyness. Not sure if I could get a whole one down.

650ml bottle pours almost black in color with a small white head that leaves no lacing on the glass. Aroma is mild roasted grains and chocolate with a definite presence of the peppers. Taste is light roast bitterness and chocolate malt sweetness up front with a strong presence of the heat from the peppers in the finish. Medium bodied with very little carbonation. It’’s not the heat of the peppers that detract from the score, but the lack of head and carbonation.

On tap at Capone’s. Brown pour with a smaller sized off white head. Roast, chocolate and peppers. Not overly burning finish, but a burning pepper finish none the less that drowned out any other tastes.

Half-pint @ Chuck’s. Glad I’m not drinking a whole pint cause this is SPICY! Goes well with my sriracha laden sausage. This is crazy spicy.
