Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows It’s a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that it’s built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that it’s bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that it’ll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone who’s counting), but what it mainly knows is that it’s a great beer.

Aroma is piny with tropical fruits - pineapple, mango, tangerine. Body is full, smooth, oily mouth feel. Well layered IPA with initial fruity flavors that fades into a grassy and lemony bitterness. Finish is long and bitter. Nice.

Pours hazy copper with a dirty white head. I can’t really pinpoint any good descriptors in the nose, but its very hop forward. I do know that I’m not the biggest fan of the hop, but that doesn’t mean its bad. There’s enough malt to counteract what I don’t enjoy. This is a fine beer but there are plenty I’d rather drink.

Appearance: Pours an amber orange with an offwhite bubbly film.

Aroma: Huge tropical nose: pineapple mango tangerine. Brown sugar. Grapefruit oils.

Taste: Grapefruity hops. Pine. Caramel malt. Finishes with lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Juicy with moderate carbonation.

Overall: this is my kinda IPA. Delicious and smells great too.

22 oz bottle. Pours amber with light tan head that provides good lacing. The aroma is grass and citrus with strong sweet caramel malt. The flavor brings out more of the hops, apricot, citrus, and toffee.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear deep amber, faint head. Floral nose with grapefruit, pear and mint. Sweet, medium bodied, rounded mouthfeel. Salty bitterish finish.

The pour is a translucent auburn color with a moderately full, white, creamy, pillowy head which settles to a thin, rocky layer and leaves scattered, drippy lace. The nose has toasted toffee, resins, light rustic, some tangerine, and faint passionfruit. The flavor is similar, still toffee, still resinous, some rustic tones, passionfruit and stonefruit, and toasted breads. The palate is more than medium, soft to lively, velvety, and slightly drying. The finish is more rustic, drying, stonefruit, and resinous. Actually a very nice beer to drink with the balance yet a moderately high bitterness. The malt base was great, really making this more of a hybrid IPA. The Nelson Sauvin notes were pleasant and complementary but not overly done. Nice beer.

Copper orange with lasting head and big chunks. Floral and fruit sweet aroma with grapefruit and orange. Toasted slightly overripe sweet orange and melon with some toasted biscuit and medium bitter orangey lingering finish. Nice mouthfeel. Good.

RoyalFlushing (326) - Mamaroneck, New York, USA - MAY 21, 2012
Bottle to chalice poured a magnificent crystal clear amber with a giant white fluffy head that retreated quickly. Aroma introduces a tropical fruit frenzy including passion fruit and guava. First sip begins with citrus upfront followed by pine hoppiness and a smooth finish. Palatable bitterness and hints of tropical fruit linger in the mouth. Impressive IPA.
