Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Its a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that its built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that its bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whos counting), but what it mainly knows is that its a great beer.

Bottle. Poured a nice cloudy copper, big off white head that left lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of fruits, floral hops and some malts. Kind of a tropical taste, actually quite sweet and fruity for an IPA (not in a bad way), very nicely balanced with the bitterness of the hops. Interesting beer, very enjoyable.

Pours a clear amber with lasting pillowy tan head. Aroma is bright Sauvin hops, loads of citrus. Taste is puckeringly bitter and delicious but theres little malt backing to speak of. Finish is tongue tingling hops, some grapefruit pith. Overall very good but I wish there was more balance to it.

Bottle. Split with and courtesy of Vinnie. Pours a clear reddish orange with specks of hop sediment suspended throughout and a fat, foamy, sudsy off-white head. The aroma is so, so cheesy, oniony, and grassy with a bunch of melon, passionfruit, and ripe orange. The flavor is very odd, but good: soft notes of cheddar cheese up front with a bunch of onion, soft hop resin, and some subtly bitter orange flavors as it finishes. The palate is so, so, so smooth and soft and the carbonation is present enough to allow the beer to stand on its own two legs, but minimal enough that the beer nearly evaporates on ones tongue. Really cool, different IPA.

Shared 22oz. bomber. Poured hazy amber with chunks of floaties. Sweet malts balanced well with notes of pine and citrus. Slightly spicy, funky finish. Medium bodied. The Nelson Sauvin hops seem a bit Tomahawk-esque.

The pour is a translucent auburn color with a moderately full, white, creamy, pillowy head which settles to a thin, rocky layer and leaves scattered, drippy lace. The nose has toasted toffee, resins, light rustic, some tangerine, and faint passionfruit. The flavor is similar, still toffee, still resinous, some rustic tones, passionfruit and stonefruit, and toasted breads. The palate is more than medium, soft to lively, velvety, and slightly drying. The finish is more rustic, drying, stonefruit, and resinous. Actually a very nice beer to drink with the balance yet a moderately high bitterness. The malt base was great, really making this more of a hybrid IPA. The Nelson Sauvin notes were pleasant and complementary but not overly done. Nice beer.

Visual: Pours almost clear toffee brown with a smallish head, a thin murky layer of retention, lots of fast steady streams. Nose: brown sugar toffee malt, lightly toasted, traces of woody apple juice. (lvl-4)-pungency Attack: crisp-slick-tingly Mid-palate: bright, (lvl-4)-sweetnesss, (MAIN) red apple, caramel maltd Finish: alcohol detection, dry stealth mild bitter lingering hopped finish. Summary: A rather fruity IPA as opposed to herbacious or piney; didnt have a whole lot of passion fruit as advertised, but some citrus. Drinkable, but the finish is a bit flat.

A better than average IPA that hits many appreciable notes: grove citrus, mellon, with a dry edge. This is very drinkable, but a tad thin in body for my liking. Overall, a nice 22oz bottle from Elysian.

On tap @ Specific Gravity, Salisbury Md-Copper pour w/a moderate tan head. Citrus hop aroma. Flavors of citrus hop/Grapefruit, tar/pitch/pine, kind of one dementional. OK, but not great in my opinion, somewhat of a hopbomb. Long finish.

Agree with the last rater that said that this was less nelson than many of the Nelson Sauvin hop driven beers that Ive had recently. Probably a bit too old I guess. I couldnt find a bottled on date. Good IPA none the less. Although it didnt stand up to the Pliny that we had. Unfair comparison I guess ;) Tropical fruit with some grapefruit. Good beer. Hops needs to be a bit fresher and more lively. Nice spice element. Good complexity. Cool label and name.
