Light syrah, oak, black peppery notes, light bready and doughy sweet malts, lightly jammy wine notes - but they are soft. Pours hazy golden orange, not much head, a bit of a foamy ring, nice sticky lace. Light red winey syrah and oak, underlying dough, bread, black pepper, red grapes, and medium syrah that rounds out the finish. Moderately oaky in the finish, the base beer hangs out and shows up just a bit here and there, but the barrel more or less dumbs down the base beer and leaves a light winey essence. Interesting light wine flavors. Smooth and lightly tannic and dry, but still some sweetness is there. It works, but seems like a werid beer to put in a barrel. bvc (1242) - Washington, USA - JUN 9, 2010
Draft at Bottleworks. Pours a hazed light orange caramel with a pillowy whit head that leaves splotchy lacing. Light sweet juiciness. Dark juicy plum, hibiscus, white grape juice, very light malt presence...just to tie it all together, with the Syrah very hidden by the fruity/floral notes. Caramel plum up front, touch of floral, the oak shows a bit in the mid palate, with a touch of tobacco, very very light Syrah, then finishes with a touch of pepper, hop bittering and biscuit...really a light flavored and body and finishes kind of refreshing.
