Serving type: bottle. Holy moly this is smoky. On the nose, it’s smoky, really smoky, like the ashes of a barley field after a rain. The taste is intense - strong smoke, a hint of coffee, and a hint of stout. Mouthfeel is maybe a bit thin, but I don’t think it a bad thing. Overall, it’s not my favorite beer, but I definitely appreciate it for what it is. It’s like drinking a smoke bomb, though a bit sweeter and with fewer carcinogens. If Rauchbiers are your thing, I’d definitely recommend.

Aroma: campfire with a chemical burst; hmmm; Appearance: very dark amber with thin white head that dissipates quickly; Taste: nice porter ruined by liquid smoke flavor; Palate: heavy body with long, chemical finish; Overall: very disappointing. Will not get again.

Shared 33cl bottle. Pours a murky coffee brown color with a small light beige head. Smoke and charred wood nose. Taste is largely smoke, some roasted malt, not even really getting any coffee. Probably the most smoky beer I’ve tasted to this point. Low carbonation. Seems a bit thin.

Aroma - beechwood smoke and peat. Appearance - the body is bistre brown, almost black. The head is beige and about 1/2". The head hangs out for a while. Some lacing. Taste - smoke flavor similar to Lapsang Souchang tea, peat, and rich roast bordering on acrid. Roast tastes like licking a stone that sat in a campfire all night. Palate - full body, thick feel, average carbonation, strong astringency.

Deep dark brown with a lasting thin light tan head. Very wood-smokey and dark roasty aroma with a bit of bitter dark cocoa. Bitter dark smokey and roasty flavor, loads of wood smoke, a touch of dark chocolate, a bit of smokey coffee...too smokey and earthy for my taste.

Aroma is light, then a bit of smoke, roasted malt and bacon. Appearance is dark brown, light brown head, thick. Taste is light, lots of smoke and bacon, then roast, some coffee. Mouthfeel is thin, decent carbonation but thin. Overall, meh.

Bottle. Cola pour with a bubbly mocha head. Bacon, oak chip, apple, coffee, soil. Very smoky. Too smoky for the body, which is more watery and lacks the depths. Not my type.

Draught at Arendsnest. Pitch black with a small tan head. Medium body with low to moderate carbonation. Smokey sweetness with nice bitter tones. Smoke, coffee, roasted malts, caramel and chocolate. A tasty well balanced smokey brew.

Tap Dark brown with a nice dark tanned head. Aroma is smoke, coffee and cured meat. Taste is malty, smoke and a light roasty astringecy reminiscent of cured meat. Really nice. Body is medium and avg co2.

Stinks Dark blackish brown, poured into fancy stout glass. Super smokey, actually way too much smoke. Cigarette butts/ash. Subtle hints of coffee, but buried behind smoke. Tough to drink.

katrinaez (2177) - norristown, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 18, 2015
UPDATED: APR 5, 2015 Overly smoked. Too light on the coffee. Aroma is nothing not smoke. First and aftertaste are all smoke. Coffee taste just isn?t there. Bottle
