The response to the Hoppiest Indian caught us napping and we struggled to keep the kegs up to the taps around the countryside, let alone locally. Come on guys, stop enjoying it so much and give us some more time on the dry hops!

Oreti Red is the second in a series of beers that we have themed Red IPA’s and we think its getting us closer to our Red IPA bullseye. NZ pale ale malt, along with Munich, CaraRed and CaraMunich form the malt base.

A high alpha NZ hop and US Centennial again flip flop their way through the boil with both hops used in large quantity in a series of warm and cold dry hopping. We’ve upped the malts to give a ’fatter’ malt base to better harmonise with the high alpha hop resins, lifting the alcohol content to 6%. For your drinking pleasure and because we can, we have lifted the hops even more...

No style guideline, no compromise.

This time there’s plenty of Oreti to go around... that’ll give us time to work on our next beer – we’re going deep and dark. A pilot brew is fermenting as we speak. Dark, talented and a touch of mystery, and it has a working title... yes ladies and gentlemen it’s ’Grace Jones’...

Pint at Pomeroy’s in Christchurch with travlr and Cantabrian. I must say, I’m bemused (and delighted) at the description of the beer being variegated. My impression was gained in poor light, but I thought it was slightly hazy reddish amber in colour with a good collar of white head. The smell was muted because the pint was cold but in the mouth there was good sprucy hoppiness with almost chewy amber malts. There was good lingering bitterness and a long finish. Tasty stuff!

Draft at Pom’s in Christchurch. Dark variegated amber maroon color, thick cream colored head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of bright pine and toasted caramel. Taste starts sweet, then nicely hopped bitter burnt toast. Tasty.

Big rich hoppy red. Lovely balance with the malts and the flavours linger on the palate. Yum.

A strong bitterness evident that is balanced by a deep malt sweetness. The malt provides and intriguing complexity, with hints of turkish delight and also quite a bit of dark chocolate, plus a healthy dose of caramel. Great to see a well-hopped NZ ale that isn’t all about the hops but on the contrary is dominated by malt sweetness. I think, in a sense it’s a beefed up version of the Bookbinder, seems to have similar malt characteristics (I guess this could be Grace Jones and Bookbinder could be one of Bill Cosby’s daughters!!) More of this please.

Beautiful hue! Very red. Nice tan head.
Roasty, nutty aromas. Strong malt, with an earthy-fruity hops. Nice!
Nice full body, heaps of flavour! Butt-loads of hops, with a solid malt base full of toasty flavours. Man this is a nice beer! Perfect for a cold night. Might be my new favourite brewers reserve.

Rigger. A red ale with a lunch of punch. Big full mouthfeel and plenty of hop to balance out the rich malt. Went down very nicely.

Pours deep amber/red, off white head. Aroma is quite malty, with a great tropical hop aroma. The flavour is robust and full bodied, rich maltiness supports a good bitterness. Well balanced, moreish and delicious. This is what an India red ale should be!
