3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours an amber-gold with a fluffy light tan head. Malty aromas, with a strong caramel character and floral hops. Malt is the first flavour on the tongue, but is soon overtaken by the smooth fruit and floral hops. There is a a subtle citrus flavour present, and caramel, vanilla and a hint of banana to sweeten on the finish. This combination is almost chocolatey. A relatively carbonated beer, with smooth, balanced flavours and a hoppy aftertaste. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on a bottle.
An old bottle dug up by BozoNZ. This has held up very well. Not so much hop any more, but the nose has a light sweetness and the there is a nice medium mouthfeel. DuffMan (10596) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - APR 7, 2009
Bottle purchased at the brewery. Lovely hazy dark orange with a huge orange-tinted head that sits like a crown. Very nice spicy fruity hop nose, lots of citrus, a little peachy, rich underlying toffee. It smells delicious! The palate is medium bodied, quite sweet. Malt takes center stage, shouldering the hops aside. This results in a sweet beer with nice flavour, but not quite the bitter finish or hoppy compliment that this beer deserves. Still very nice, but not Emerson’s best offering. On a separate note, not to be picky, but I’m not sure why this is classified as an old ale. To me this fits into that nebulous category of American strong ale (lots of hops and malt character with higher ABV), or even IPA. bozoNZ (778) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - MAR 24, 2009
500ml bottle. Murky amber with lively loud carbonation forming a big head. After warming a light perfume with sweetness and hot alcohol detected on the nose. Resinous hop flavours dominate citrus lending towards orange with some spices and vanilla toffee. Any warmth is from the alcohol as it warms but lacks some nice malt punch to really make it a showstopper. sdriessen (320) - Dunedin, NEW ZEALAND - FEB 25, 2009
Orange hue, cloudy with an off-white head.
Aroma is of a floral hops with peach, apricot and ripe oranges. Hints of toffee and a peppery spice.
This one is quite spicy on the palate.
Flavours are otherwise malty, with a zesty hop bitterness.
Citrus flavours with a heavy spice and some alcohol make this one quite warming!
Unfortunately quite a harsh carbonation.
Finish is of orange rind, a nice bitterness and more spice. donfardz64 (538) - Wellington, New Zealand, NEW ZEALAND - FEB 19, 2009
Pours hazy amber with a fluffy off white head.
The aroma is somewhat hoppy, with citric fruity hops taking over the nose, and a solid malty base with a spicy note.
A very crisp, fruity flavour. Citrus notes stand out and hop bitterness is quite strong. A smooth nutty malt underlies all of this. She’s a very well balanced, complex ale. The 7% alcohol is undetectable. Amazing!
