Seasonal Spice Chocolate Toffee. A winter stablemate to the Emerson’s Weissbier, a delicious dark wheat beer brewed with a potpourri of different malts to achieve the tasty complexion; Canterbury lager malt, German wheat malt, crystal, caramunich, then finally caramelised and roasted wheat to complete the malty depth of flavours.

beer4eternity (226) - Tauranga, - SEP 17, 2011
UPDATED: SEP 19, 2011 500ml bottle. 359A. Looks great in the glass; opaque then cloudy with the swirl, deep mahogany hue with a lasting generous creamy beige head and thick lacing. Absolutely delicious aromas; big hits of spice especially clove, banana, and bubblegum dominate with toasted malt, caramel, toffee, light vanilla and a hint of milk chocolate, later on a bit of blue cheese aroma. The aromas meld well with the taste which is so nice it has to be savoured; malty chocolaty sweet mostly with a light bitterness, finishing with a definite warm spiciness. Appealing palate; medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, soft milk-chocolaty finish finally ending dry with a spicy tingle. Wow that was fantastic!

500ml bottle, weizen glass & tulip glass. Top half looked good in a weizen glass; clear amber-brown hue with a wonderful ruby tint when the light shone through, light beige coloured medium sized mostly lasting head, impressive lacing, (bottom half with yeast/sediment swirled in looked a terrible murky brown with no head). A mixture of mostly good aromas - some faint off aromas (acetaldehyde) initially but fortunately they were displaced by a very nice mix of brown spice (strong clove, mild cinnamon), banana, leather, and bubblegum, followed later by milk chocolate, and toffee. Initial taste was an unpleasant acetic but thankfully that was short lived and soon a nice balanced sweet/spicy/bitter taste. Medium to full bodied, sticky and mildly oily texture well carbonated, with a warm alcoholic finish. I didn’t get off to a good start with this beer but soon started to like it, by the end of the bottle...very nice indeed.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2014 Definitely not a Dunkel/Tmavý as previously styled here, but a Dunkelweizen. Donau-muddy in appearance, with a very firm light brown head and plenty of carbonation. All aromas and flavours of a Dunkelweizen, with chocolates, banana chewing gum, malts, mulch and cloves. Taken together with a German one, very similar, but the flavours are less polished and less roundedly packed together.

Very interesting flavours and long after taste ruined by way too much carbonation. dark chocolate flavour, dark brown colour, lightly sour, typically wheat. Taste was good but destroyed by the fizz. Too fizzy but long finish. Gets an overall of 11 but would have been a 14 with less fizz.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2014 Was a little disappointed with this beer. Tastes were there but were a little light/ watery. Did not compare to others of the style sampled during a session but might be worth trying again given Emerson’s well deserved reputation.
