COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Zapotopaz is Emma’s big summer’s night sipper, packed with Australian Topaz hops, topped off with Simcoe and Chinook, carried by a sturdy malt backbone. Expect lychee, blood oranges, blackcurrants and pine descending into caramel depths counterbalanced by a decent, lingering bitterness.

Aroma is some toffee cactus fruit some more tropic fruit a bit resin. Taste is sweet toffee with some bitter hop counterpoint. Incredibly drinkable. Nice.

German ale hopped with Topaz, from a beer company operating at Rogg in southwestern Germany apparently; many thanks to bartlebier for the bottle - and to tderoeck for passing it to me. Membranously lacing, thick, frothy, regularly shaped, pale yellowish beige head, very stable and remaining closed for most of the time, crowning a hazy amberish bronze beer with faint khaki tinge. Expressively malty and modern hoppy nose of sweet paprika, biscuit, red onions, frying oil, toasted bread, cheese crust, wormwood, dried apricot, pink peppercorns, grapefruit peel, green olive. Cleanly fruity onset, some dried apricot and apple peel sweetishness with a dash of green olive somewhere, dim sourish undercurrent, medium carbonated with a full, rounded mouthfeel. Pleasantly biscuity and caramelly, eventually mildly toasted bittersweet malt body, supporting an expressive, well-positioned modern hop profile, depositing a rooty, wormwoody bitterness on the root of the tongue - softened by the toasted bitterness - and pushing up grapefruity, floral and paprika-like hop aromas retronasally. Warming, gin-like alcohol afterglow, but remaining well-masked and not disturbing the delicate play of malts and hops. Somewhat of an American strong ale along the lines of Stone's Arrogant Bastard and the like - more and more of these American style craft beers are coming out of Europe's most protective and conservative beer country these days, an exciting thing to follow. Has a certain 'Gründlichkeit' to it, perfectly balanced and well-bodied, while at the same time being up to date in its hop profile and retaining a high drinkability and appetizing character. Nice one!

Tap. Hazy amber color with beige head. Aroma is caramel, piney, a bit sticky, some delicate tropical fruits. Taste is caramel, bready, piney, bitter hops. Oily viscous mouthfeel with low carbonation. Very good!

Bonne surprise.

Bottle from Bierlinie - very dark copper color, white head. not very different in taste from other DIPAs, but it's fully on Topaz here, which is not my favourite. strong malty body, low carbonation with hop notes of overripe tropical fruits. sherry barrel. The lycee smell and taste gets more and more nauseating. I acknowledge this is a well made beer, but would not go for this again.

I bought this bottle at the Bierhandlung in Freiburg am Brisgau. I drank it tonight at Lausanne with my wife. It is a good experience, robust ale, it sounds more an IPA with all the qualities. Firstly, the body is a pleasant copper body, white head staying longer than usual. The sensation is really delicious in the mouth, the kind of beverage giving positive energy: floral hop, citrus, resine notes, lovely bitterness staying a long moment in the throat, sweet due to resine notes, next one for sweet dream!!!!!!

Short review from tap. Hazy amber coloured beer with a medium sized, quite good lasting head. Aroma is fruity, hoppy. Taste is well balanced malty and fruity. Good.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2017 33cl bottle, bb 07.03.2018. Intense citrusy aroma of blood orange, pomelo and some sweet honeydew melon. Taste is intense pine with citrus fruit nicely embeded in a light caramel and malt body. Pretty long gentle bitter finish. This beer makes you long for another bottle and another bottle and... but beware of the alcohol that is perfectly hidden.
