Taste: rich toasted almost sweet malts, caramel, spiced. Roasted malt grain nose. Deep copper color, clear with a tall head, some lace. Pair well with most roasted meats.

On tap at Emmett’s in Downers Grove while at the 1st ever Chicago Ratebeer meeting. <!-- p --> Darker amber with a thin tan-ish head. Nose fairly thin but with some malts and cream. Taste is maltish with some darker fruits and liquorice with just a hint of pepper. Overall, pretty good.

Pint at Emmett’s DG - Aroma of roasted malts, toffee, and chocolate. Pours black-brown with a medium head and great lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Creamy palate. Easy drinking and tasty.

JMerritt (1941) - Macomb, Illinois, USA - MAR 6, 2004
Red brown with an off-white/tan head of generous size. Sour grain (straw) aroma. Strange fruity, almost cranberry-ish undertones, with ripened plums. Silky mouthfeel, mildly sweet finish.

Narnad (1518) - Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA - FEB 25, 2010
Served at the West Dundee location in a pint glass. Arrived to the table from the tap a very dark brown with beautiful deep garnet highlights. A top the brew sat a very dense, one inch deep, tan head. Aroma had a strong toasted note with mild chocolate, light raisin and a very light hint of coffee bitterness at the tail end. Flavor has a strong toasted note very early up front but this is quickly over powered by a sweet chocolate malt flavor followed up by a raisin fruitiness to finish up the flavor. The chocolate note was a lot more prevalent in the flavor than the aroma eluded too. The body was a moderate to heavy feeling and the low carbonation lends a creamy feeling to the brew. Overall the chocolate is a bit on the strong side for my tastes as it makes the brew a bit sweet and forces the Munich malt toasted notes to the background. Still an enjoyable brew.

Had to stop on the way home today for this one, since I cleverly didn’t try it the other day when at Emmett’s for the 1st Chicago RateBeerian meeting. Not a bad dunkel (Did Emmett’s misspell it this way?), pouring a deep amber-brown with a slender off-white head. The aroma is light but malty with hints of juicy fruits. The taste is sweet malt with the fruits turning darker. No detectable hops. Okay.

ElGaucho (2393) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - SEP 15, 2006
What’s frustrating about Emmett’s is their inconsistent beer naming conventions. This brew was listed as "German Dunkel" at Emmett’s in Downers Grove, and likely "Munich Dunkel" at West Dundee. They had tastings at their two locations this month featuring, as listed on their website, their "American Amber Ale". At Downers Grove, they were handing out flyers for the tasting, touting the beer as "Centennial Amber Ale". This is confusing to the consumer and even more importantly, to the beer raters, who might have separate listings for the same beer. Now to this beer, whatever they call it. Not much aroma. Darker than the Patriot’s Pride in body. Has a tan head. Some read hues. Nice lace. Clear German character. They nailed the style, but it comes out too basic, fairly bland and lacking in character.

Quite a nice surprise from these guys...with it’s rich dark pour and slight tan head that dissipates quickly. Lighly roasted malts and a nutty creaminess dominates the nose. The flavors are a lightly roasted caramel malt, hint of light smoke, toffee, and licorice...all riding on top of a very mild lager...with a very light, perhaps imaginary, herbal/earthy hop highlight. Mouthfeel is very light, creamy smooth, and just short of insubstantial...but that just leaves room for at least one more!

Sample at the Downers Grove brewpub. Poured a clear, dark mahogany with an average, foamy, tan head and some spotty lacing. The aroma was a little dry and nutty, with distinct roasted malt notes, and a touch of sweetness. The flavor added some toastiness and retained the low sweetness. A bit light on the body, with a little dryness on the finish. Not bad

Draft, Downers Grove. I seem to have a problem, either with Emmett’s German-style lagers or with the Dunkel style itself: my pint had a noticeable tang of dead yeast. I once made a Dunkel with a "no-boil" kit (that I boiled anyway) and got the same result. Well, this pours a deep brown, with red highlights and a brownish, creamy head. Dark malt smell, just a little sweet, with notes of light chocolate. Taste brings up those roast malts. Mostly pretty smooth, but again that autolysis. Yeast bite may be the cause of a slight sour cherry underlayment.
