Draft at source. Nose is light bread and chocolate but otherwise rather neutral. Taste is a pleasant, very nutty and lightly sweet malt backbone. Finished with just a touch of roast to dry it out. The toast kind of builds as the beer continues. I imagine after a pint that could be distracting but in a taste size it isn’t bad. thegreenrooster (4448) - St.louis, Missouri, USA - AUG 16, 2010
Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is crisp rosted malts with with a nice hop. Flaovr is more of the hops than anything. Decent pine and citrus hops with a bit of the chocolate malts toward the end. The brewer was deffinalty going for a hoppy brown ale. sickboy79 (66) - USA - JUL 24, 2010
Big fan of this one. It’s a mix of a nice Pale Ale with a hint of brown ale mixed in. It has a wonderful hop aroma and flavor with some malty sweetness. JaBier (8027) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - DEC 30, 2009
Sample at the Downer’s Grove location. Clear brown pour with a medium beige head. Earthy hop aroma with some caramel malt balance. Mostly malty flavor with some bitter earthy hops on the back end. Pretty good and one of the better offerings of the day. DrnkMcDermott (3108) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - OCT 20, 2008
Draft at Downers Grove, English pint glass. Now they call it an "English Brown Ale," and I’m liking this a lot. Opaque, dark brown under a thin scrum of foam that rises up on the edge. Bracing malt smell laced with familiar English hop nose. Taste is beautifully nutty and roasty with strong tea notes. This suggested Fuggles hops (like I know) with some mint around the edges. A slight burn from prickly carbonation, where the alcohol is hiding. Would like to see this on a cask pour.

A pint with lunch at the Downers Grove ale house. Tapped a dark brown hue with a modest off white/light tan head. Very citrusy, light pine, hop aroma. Lighter to the taste than expected following the nose, but pleasant mocha/roasted coffee flavor. Lingering dryness throughout. RAYBOY01 (2010) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 8, 2007
Medium deep mahogany pour with a rocky tan head. The nose is largely PNW hopping...pine and grapefruit. The flavor is mildly sweet roasted caramel malts, and that PNW hops again. There is a touch of nuttiness in the finish that is nice. Decent sessionable brew. Headbanger (3999) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - SEP 17, 2006
Draft Downer’s Grove-Aroma of hops on a dark amber with a white head. Has a good mix between malt and hops. A good tasting brew. ElGaucho (2401) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - SEP 15, 2006
Downers Grove, tap. Hops and malt in the nose; good balance. Nice. Very dark body with some reddish hues and a tan head. Excellent lace. Nice balance in the flavor. Malt is predominant but has a nice bitterness. This is a well made beer. kseecs16 (1216) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - SEP 14, 2006
Draft at Downers Grove. Pours a dark drown that lightens to a copper color around the edges of the glass. Head is moderate in size but sticks around with an off-white color that darkens as you swirl it. Aroma is reminiscent of their pale ale but with an added sweet malt aspect. The aroma and the taste tie together as this beer has a nice clean hop profile but a surprising sweet malty body. Smooth and clean with a nice lingering bitterness. The bartender referred to this as a "chocolate dipped pale ale" I can buy that, and it was pretty good I could drink it all day.
