The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Pours a nearly opaque reddish brown with a small off white head. Aroma is tart cherries, green apples, and wheat. The taste starts out cherry sweet, then green apple tart and finishes nearly vinegar sour. Very good lambic/sour.

Many thanks to Thirstybird for this bottle. Intense sourish red beginning. Dry and smooth, lots of dry woody sourness. Lots of woody sourness, red cherries, dry sour plums. Great deep and refreshing sour aftertaste, round but nice sour.

Pours a bright red-amber, flimsy ivory colored head. A brief whiff of barnyard up front on the nose but heavy raspberry wherever you go with this beer, caramel and toffee traces in the end. A fun sour, very dry.

33 cl bottle. Garnet colored with a small creamy beige head. Fragrant, tart dark fruit nose. Intense sour fruit on palate. Bitter almond and dark cherry notes. Tart complex malty finish has apple cider vinegar notes.

Gekocht op zaterdag 4-2-2017 bij K&S Beer Tobacco Galerie in de Katelijnestraat 52 te Brugge tijdens het 10e Bruggse bierfestival. Een winkeltje waar je keuze hebt uit meer dan 500 verschillende bieren en met nog een ingang/achterdeur rechttegenover brouwerij De Halve Maan. Thuis geproefd op 23-9-2017. Cuvee Des Jacobines Rouge is een helder en donkerbruin biertje dat een normale hoeveelheid schuim produceert bij het uitgieten, het heeft een beige kleur en vormt een gelijkmatige laag. Zwak wandklevend. Het schuim is zeer vlug weg, na een tijdje blijft er niets meer van over. Weinig CO2 verzadiging te zien met middelmatig grootte belletjes. Het aroma van Cuvee Des Jacobines Rouge is melkzurig en fruitig met krieken, ook wat hout zit erin. De smaak is eerst zoet en dan komt het melkzure en ook wat azijnzuur, hij is ook fruitig zoet met de krieken, ook het hout en ook wat vanille zijn present. In de mond geeft Cuvee Des Jacobines Rouge een deftige boddy die wat bitterdroog is en een volmondige textuur bezit, normale CO2 prikkeling. Een mooie harmonieus biertje. De nasmaak vloeit uit is zoetig, zuur en licht droog. Verder nog wat melk- en azijn zurige toetsen, wat krieken, zoet fruit en vanille. Spijtig dat de aroma's en in lichtere mate de smaak na een tijdje beginnen te vervagen (doordat het schuim zeer snel weg is waarschijnlijk), het is geen biertje om lang in het glas laten te staan.

Bottle had many times. Pours out amber red color topped with a white head. Nose is Cherry's red currants a little bit of vanilla and Oak. Taste is cherries light sour notes oak wood and a little wine notes.

Must try this one again. I loved it but it's probably not approachable for most people. Pronounced sourness. The most sour of the sours I have had yet. Almost vinegar like. But I quite liked it. I will need to drink it a few times to dig into its complexity. The sourness is the overpowering attribute and that makes it hard to put your finger on this more subtle attributes. I've had it a number of times now and still quite like it. The sourness it's not as strikingly pronounced after you've had it a few times. Noticed notes of sour apple and cherries this time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

F: medium size, tan/tanned, average retention. C: dark ruby red/ dark brown, clear against the light. A: chocolate, vinous, red fruits, bit brett, woody, dark cherries, bit of vanilla. T: sour red fruits, brett, woody, bit vinous, sour cherries, funky, sour green apples peels, medium to full body, medium carbonation, very nice for the style, fully enjoyed, 33cl bottle from Bierwinkel De Hopduvel in Gent.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2017 At Brussels Beer festival September 2017. On tap. Clear red brown lasting beige head. sour red cherry. Not overly complex but good enough. Touch of red wine vinegar towards end. Good. Like a flemish sour but a bit more sour. Decent. Bit obvious. Grew on me but the sweet is too sweet and the sour too sour.

I hate sour beers. I tried this one trusting the amazing score here. Smells like red wine must. Winegar, wine wort and lemon juice, backed by woody malts. So acid that it burns the throat. Taste is sure complex and egant but really this is done for people who like very acid stuff. This will be my last one, for sure, i can’t drink this.
