3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 3, 2014 (Bottle). Very nice and fresh hop aroma with a solid foundation of roasted malt, slightly smoky with hints of licorice. Great taste of roasted malt and licorice with distinct flavors from the hops. In some respects reminiscent of a Porter. Absolutely superb beer!
Poured at Shelton Festival, black with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is roast, wood, licorice, pine. Medium body, roasted malt, pine, spice, dry finish, very good. rejtable (2890) - Ontario, CANADA - DEC 18, 2017
Bottle at Xmas 2017 gathering. Pours dark some head and lacing. Nose of coffee, espresso, dark fruit. Big bitter med/big sweet. MetalNHopHead (2271) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - NOV 29, 2017
Between the charred malt and the large hop bill, Black IPA can be one of the more aggressive styles, and I would rank this is one of the most hop-forward Black IPA's that I've had in recent memory. This brew pours ink black. The brown head sticks around for a while. Grassy, piney, and floral nose. Coffee and bittersweet cocoa notes from the malts. Pithy and bitter citrus notes. Resinous. This is the kind of Black IPA I want to be when I grow up. skrip (230) - New Jersey, USA - AUG 23, 2017
750ml bottle poured into a Jester King/Cantillon Zwanze Day tulip.
A~ pitch black with a big soapy like tan head. along with a lot of lacing.
S~ citrusy hops and dank grass up front. faint roasty malts in the background along with a bit of fresh coffee and dark chocolate.
T~ extremely citrusy from the hops. i’m guessing citra, simcoe, and nelson. nelson seems to add some amazing vomit like flavor haha a lot like a dark Enjoy By. (if there is nelson that is haha) the taste then proceeds to follow the nose with a ton of roasty malts, coffee, and dark bitter chocolate.
M~ nice silky smooth feel. with less hops this is what the original version of Daybreak should have been in my opinion. nice carbonation and refreshing as well.
O~ i’m actually very impressed by this colab. yesss.... it IS a Grassroots colab. haha super well balanced and honestly might be one of my favorite black IPA’s. once again i’m biased cause this is one of my favorite styles. hence the high rating =] BigBeer45 (1585) - Michigan, USA - AUG 15, 2017
Bottle sampled in a glass,
this beer was dark brown / black, it had a nice, thick, creamy looking chocolate shake cover of bubbles, it left nice spots and partial rings of lacing on the glass,
the nose had aromas of grapefruit citrus and herb hops, chocolate, roasted malt, some dark cocoa, faint dark fruit (prune & fig),
malt sweetness with some brown sugar,
the flavors were big roasted malt, coffee, citrus hops, some dark and bitter chocolate, faint licorice in the background,
some malt sweetness and a hint of molasses,
there was a good hop bite with roasted malt bitterness, the bitterness lingered on the tongue,
the mouth feel was medium, this drink was nice and creamy, and there was average carbonation,
this beer was a very roasted malt IPA beer, a nice drink.

500 ml. no bottling date evident. Black pour with a humongous foam that settles to a sticky disc. Nose is mild but pleasant mix of cocoa, resin and citrus. Tastes of cocoa, doughnut, orange zest and light peppery resin. Medium-plus body has medium carbonation and a drinkable balance. 77ships (11482) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - FEB 15, 2017
Draft glass @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Black indeed with a creamy tanned head. Nose is pine resin, very thick, herbal bitter, raw with some red grape, illusion of black chocolate, very bitter, raw. Taste is extremely bitter, one of the harshest IPA’s I have ever had, extremely really, very bitter herbal, lingering, burned malts, low very bitter licorice, burned malts, lingering burned malts, bitterness really last, very bitter red grape, aggressive,... Very thick black malt, syrup, burned malts, roast body. Extremely bitter in a more old fashioned fashion, brutal, enjoyable even if hard to drink. JK54B (1602) - Helsinki, FINLAND - FEB 13, 2017
Nose ginger bread. Pale beige head. Dark black color. Malty and hoppy taste. Some spices too. Hoppy bitterness at end. wlajwl (7211) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - FEB 2, 2017
Aroma is dark malts and sugary/citrus/fruit. The flavor is pine needles, citrus/fruit, dark malts and a mix of sugar and spices in the finish. Bought on a five dollar markdown, probably was old, but was pretty good for its age.
