Abner: Imperial IPA brewed with a plethora of hops.
Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children.  In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well.  It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped.  Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

As soon I popped the top on this growler I was attacked with a huge hoppy presence. Grapefruit is huge! Citrus isn’t lagging far behind and a piney aroma brings up the rear. I could of sat there all night long just taking in the aroma of this beer. Amazing! Now a lot of the time iyou’ll hear me say something like “The taste doesn’t match the aroma” Not here. I think the taste is actually better than the aroma. The hop profile here isn’t “clean”. Instead it’s a deep hop aroma. It’s hard to explain other than say it’s a dank and dirty and it’s just over the top fantastic. Huge amount of grapefruit, citrus, and pine. It just sits there, lingers There seems to be some other tropical fruits mixed in there but the grapefruit and citrus take frontstage and run away with the show. You can tell this beer is dry hopped big time. It just sits in the mouth. There’s a slight bitterness to it that comes in about half way and lingers just a tad on the aftertaste. Everything about this beer just worked for me. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chewy, and leaves a bit of a dryness on the palette.

On tap at Armsby Abbey in Woo-stah. IPA pour with an off-white head. Super smooth. Hoppy. Citrusy. Oranges. Other tropical fruit. Wow! The smoothness for a DIPA is the best attribute. So clean. 17.2

Draft ta Armsby Abbey. Pours pineapple yellow with a thick white head. Leaves a shitload off lacing in the glass. Lots of dankness on the nose. Big grapefruit and pine on the tongue. Finished with a nice amount of bitterness. Solid.

On tap at Farmhouse Tap and Grill in Burlington, Vermont. Pours milky yellow with spritz of white head and lacing. Aroma: pine, pineapple and mango -- all strong-smelling. Flavor: all of the above -- on steroids! Mouthfeel: full-bodied, oily from the hop resins.

*4/4/2013 750ml growler poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. A~ hazy, glowing orange with a slight white head and lots of lacing. also a good amount of sediment, not as bad as heady though haha. S~ sooo much citrus, and pineapple. a little bit of earthy pine and a little hay funk. T~ like the nose, lots of citrus hop bitterness. lots of grapefruit and pine. the hay funk comes in on the end along with a lot of bitterness. M~ very smooth and dry on the finish. O~ definitely a great IPA, i love how their saison style comes through a little bit on this one. i could drink this every day when i’m in a hoppy mode, recommended for sure!

Poured from a growler purchased at the brewery. This was my favorite of all the ones I sampled there so you know its really f’in good. The aroma is sour oranges with some pine and the appearance is a cloudy thick unfiltered orange/apple juice looking thing, extremely dank. The taste is a whizz bang punch of perfectly balanced resin, hops, pine, and fruit that disguises the 9%abv and keeps you coming back for more. Seriously, this might be the most perfectly balanced imperial IPA I’ve ever had; all of its humors are in even keel. One of the best beers I’ve ever had and one I would definitely get again when I make my next VT beer journey. Good for following up a deli sandwich with images of terrifying anti social rasta bananas in trees.
