Tart of Darkness is a traditional stout that we aged in used oak barrels from The Bruery that had previously housed beers such as Cuivre or Black Tuesday. We then brought them over to Bruery Terreux, added our special blend of souring bacterias and wild yeasts and watched nature take its course. The result is a perfectly tart yet awesomely dark and roasty, sour stout. Not a style you will see very often, and in our opinion, not a style seen often enough. This unique stout has notes of tart plums, roasted coffee, vanilla and oak.

25oz bottle. Really glad I have 2 more. Pours a fantastic opaque black hue, off white head. The aromas are blockbuster, tart cherry fruit, cocoa, but a really interesting acidity. Palate translates so well from the nose, a burst of super tart fruit up front that lingers through the mid and once it hits the finish a lighter cocoa powder. Really roasty and delicious, but so balanced, maybe one of the most balanced offerings ive had in a while. A seemingly flawless transition of sour and stout. Amazing.

Bottling date 6/22/15, #223 part 1, 18-month old bottle. Pours opaque ruby red-black with a small, thin bone-colored head that was gone quickly. Notes of tart cherry and chocolate to the aroma, maybe some lactic sourness too. Body is medium-to-full with some oil to it. Very dry finish. Flavor is lactic sour, with notes of chocolate and cherry underneath.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 28C). Bottle 75 cl - Batch unknown (BBF unknown). AROMA: medium-low roasted malt and barrel. medium-low sour and wild fermentation aroma (slight barnyard). APPEARANCE: dark brown color and almost opaque with ruby highlights. medium light brown head with low retention. TASTE: initial medium-low roasted flavor with a slight coffee and barrel note, followed by a medium-high sour/tartaric note. medium bitterness with a dry finish with a slight roasted aftertaste. PALATE: medium-low body with meidum-low carbonation. tartaric sensation. OVERALL: an interesting sour stout that would benefit with a bit more balance with the acid note.

2013 vintage at Stout in Studio City. Pretty much opaque black with a one inch quickly dissipating head and a little bit of oily lace. Aromas of tart cherries that become more noticeable as it warms, vanilla, semisweet chocolate, and dark fruit. Big sour taste up front, with tart cherries, plums, vanilla and some malt. Medium body, minimal carbonation, slightly watery mouthfeel and a tart finish.

The main flavors here are that sourness with an almost gingerbread note that I find in many Bruery Terreux sours, with a roasty, stout background. I like this quite a lot.

6.6% ABV, bottled 2016 I believe. Pours a dark plum brown with a decent sized khaki head. Musky oak and dark fruit dominate the nose. Very tart, somewhat sweet. Medium bodied, decently active, with a tannic drying oaky finish. Definitely nothing Id want more than a few ounces of because of the level of tartness, but it was great to try this.

Bottle. Dark color. Opaque. Dark brown to black. Low carbonation. Some small bubbles but not much. Aroma is oak, dark wine, chocolate. Vibrant nose. Dark fruit, plums, berries. Slight sour aroma balanced well. Flavor is decidedly tart with dates and plum. Dark roast. Chocolate notes. Fairly well blended between the intense characteristics. Nice.

Are one of their beers that is more on the subtle side. Appearances opaque brown black with a very short-lived fizzy head and no lace. Aroma is tired roast a little bit of coffee and a tiny bit of fruit at the very end. Flavor is like nose fairly dry except for the fruit at the end which is just a suggestion of sweetness. Clean finish.

Although undoubtably a good beer I didnt feel that it lived up to the reputation that preceded it. The dark, roasts flavours of the stout base were almost completely overwhelmed by the lactic sourness. There was a long lasting flavour of sour plums which was pleasant enough. If you didnt know what you were drinking you could be forgiven for likening it to an oud brune.
