One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2012 Final beer of a very thankful and loaded night - this has lots to live up to, by golly. Aroma - mmm. Best yeast I have ever smelled in an impy. Nice dark chocolate with coffee roast. Great appearance of darkness with incredible head and retention; very good lacing also. Flavor - oh geez. This is just so. Best beer night of my life. I get Stone Double Bastard, and then this? Has God blessed me this much? Blends all the best coffee characteristics of their Java with all the richness and licorice and complexity of their Kalamazoo. w00ters. NEARLY at the Founders Breakfast Stout, methinks, if not quite at the *@&$ level of Goose Island Bourbon. Blind taste testing someday plz? RE-RATE: At the level of Founders. Would be hard-pressed to decide between the two. ANOTHER RE-RATE: It was not quite at the level of Founders. Little heavy on the palate. Still a phenomenal beer.

December 13th, 2014 - Bell’s Expedition Stout feels like part of a panther at this point. Classic, well known, and an established reputation, it’s small wonder I don’t have the Expedition Stout with more frequency, save for the previous barrier of being in a part of the country where Bell’s didn’t distribute. The Expedition Stout advertises its unctuous intensity from the pour, slow and oily, like pouring a thick dark nectar into the glass. And there it sits like an anchor, unperturbed, with just a thin, soy-sauce like foam on top, barely a quarter of a centimeter. This allows the heavy aroma to unfurl from the brew, like the Old Rasputin but darker. Notes of charcoal, pine can and steak fond, with a licorice lacquer. The flavor is even more engaging, with a forward boozy quality that is strong by restrained. The heavy flavor oozes with a long, delicious caramel flavor and licorice aftertaste, direct and exquisitely balanced. Not especially complex, the flavors are direct and candid, but also harmonious.

I love this beer. The first time I had it was watching a Bruins game while at a secluded beach shack of a bar in FL (’13). This beer pours black in color with a tan head. Chocolate, caramel, roast aromas. Thick and intense flavor; immensely chocolatey with roast edges that hit hard in the cheeks but then coats the mouth and lingers. This is really just a classic in the style and amazingly stands above so many that have come along since. Notes: ’14 bottle opened Apr ’17

A perfect imperial stout. Aroma is so rich, it has almost everything nice ini it - dark chocolate, hazelnuts, ceamed coffee, toffe, freshly cooked bread, dark plums... The taste is undescribable, it is just pure happiness in a bottle... So, I won’t try to describe it as I know I cant find any righ words for it. This beer feels almost velvety in mouth and leaves an aftertaste of honey and propolis. I am astonished. This is my favourite beer for now. This... this can’t be brewed by simply humans. Looks like Gambrius himself has given an helping hand to the brewers at Bell’s.

Bottle 355 ml / Craftgallery - Bern (CH). Black and fat beer with an average tan head. Roasted aromas, chocolate-coffee, dark fruits are the beginnings of an amazing tasting. To the taste, it’s the same with fruity of candied cherry, caramel-molasses-maple, vanilla touch. As it aged moderatly, the flavors of malt and hop are ideally melted to perfection. A great moment.

330 ml bottle at Wild Turkey, Castelgomberto (VI), Italy. Colour is black with a small long lasty, creamy brown head. Aroma is chocolate, spices, pepper, coffee, smoked, roaste malts, liqorice, dark fruits. Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, resins. Medium sweet. Body is full, creamy texture, average carbonation. Finish is warm and long.

Bottle. 10.5%. No best before date, but ’packaged’ on 11.06.15. Pours an oily black, with a dark tan head. Slight lacing. Somewhat fat aroma, roasted, with light rye and dark fruit notes, the latter increasing a bit as it warms. Metallic hint, and a hint of whisky deep down as well. Further warming brings out some kind of ’minty’ touch. Flavour is fat, almost chewy, slightly tart, roasted, with notes of liquorice, rye, dark fruits. Hint of hops in the background. Roasted, dark fruits finish with a medium alcohol burn and a mild bitterness, hinting at dark chocolate. Lingering light grassy note. Smooth palate. Overall really good. If anything, it could do with a bit more complexity in aroma and flavour, but it’s still so well-made and -balanced, that it doesn’t really matter. 20.04.17.

Pitch black pour with a medium height espresso head . Smells like cocoa,vanilla milk chocolate,roasted malts,dry cherries. Very smooth texture with low carbonation and taste notes that include cocoa beans, espresso, roasted malts and dark chocolate ,vanilla. Very well balanced and just the perfect mouthfeel.

2015. Cholernie się utleniło, czego nie lubię w RIS-ach. Dałbym sobie rękę uciąć, że świeże jest lepsze i mam w planach takie spróbować w przyszłości. Poszło mocno w czerwone owoce i śliwki. Obecnie największym atutem tego piwa jest jego ciało, gęstość porównywalna z olejem silnikowym, wykleja aż miło. Niestety, to utlenienie mnie męczyło i piwo z kretesem przegrało bezpośrednie starcie z rok świeższym Black Note. Do zobaczenia za jakiś czas.
