Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

From a 355ml bottle on 28/5/2012 (2012 edition). Pours a slightly cloudy reddy amber, with a small to medium head. Smells of caramel, toffee, fudge, spices, rye bread and fruity, resiny hops. Flavours erupt as soon as it hits the mouth. There’s sweet caramel, citrus fruit (orange and mandarin), orange peel, Christmas cake and a good dash of warming alcohol. But it’s the hops that really blow you away, with a huge grapefruit bitterness which seems to linger forever. The extreme bitterness counters the initial sweetness perfectly. Has a slightly syrupy texture. This is astoundingly good and complex stuff. Definitely the best barley wine I’ve had to date, and one the finest beers period.

12fl oz bottle. 2016 Vintage. Pours a reddish brown (like the colour of weak black tea) with a very light haze and a thin tan head. Smells AMAZING. Lots of dried fruit (almost fruit cake-y), fresh pumpkin, brown sugar, light resinous hops, and sticky toffee pudding. Taste wise, full bodied and sweet with toffee, molasses, resinous notes, and a light floral note that leads into big bitterness of the resinous variety, very light malt under that and a long bitter citrus pith finish. Top notch.

12oz brown bottle. 2016 bottling. Clear and sediment free, colour is red-brown. Creamy beige head with good retention. Aroma - toffee, nut, grain, chocolate. Taste - toffee, grains, toasted malt, malt fruitiness, big late hop kick, after taste is bitter. Full bodied and mild carbonation levels. Pretty much the blueprint of American barleywine. A classic beer.

2017, in der schwarzen Flasche. Optisch dunkles Kupfer. Cremeschaum. In der Nase malzig, Karamell, Trauben. Im Trunk schön erdig, wärmend, leicht alkoholisch, warme Malznoten, Cognac, Holz, dunkle Trauben, leicht nussig. Langer Malzabgang. Feines Ding, ordentlicher Absacker.

Vintage 2016: bready, toffee, biscuity, caramely notes, some dark fruit esters, high hop bitterness, with high hop flavors (marmelade-like, floral, citrusy, fruity notes). Full bodied, smooth texture, moderate carbonation. Typical American style barley wine. The good one.

Bill Becker (2010) - Casper, Wyoming, USA - OCT 24, 2017
From Mar 2006 Poured from bottle(2006-room temp) a dark red with a medium sized head of foam that dissipated quickly. The smell is a nice mix of hoppiness and a caramel malt. The taste is big, huge, citrusy hoppy goodness up front that gets my palate's attention and almost puts a stranglehold on it. ;^) Mid way through, there's a good malt presence that stays right through to the finish though, right at the very end, the hops return just to let you know "who" is in command. Absolutely delicious! Bottom line: I've had the Bigfoot many times and it never fails to satisfy. Highly recommended!

355ml bottle. Pours a deep amber with a thin beige head. Aroma: malt, toffee, pine, mild citrus, dried fruit. Taste: malt, mild toffee, pine, citrus, raisins, dates, caramel flavours. Medium bodied. Moderate sweetness, followed by mild bitterness. Moderate carbonation. Well balanced, and easy to drink. This was my first Barley wine beer, and whilst there are better examples out there, this is nevertheless very tasty! Always am happy to give this another crack!

McSherman (684) - Aachen, GERMANY - OCT 14, 2017
Schöne orange-rote Farbe. Geruch stark malzig, würzig. Geschmack malzig alkoholisch würzig und dann ordentlich bitter, ohne starke Hopfenaromen.

Fules (1433) - Gyöngyös, HUNGARY - OCT 4, 2017
Közepes, nagyon tartós, bézs hab, barna szín. Karamelles, gabonás, kissé fűszeres illat, némi szúrós, észteres felhanggal. Karamelles, malátás alapíz, markáns fűszeres, komlós aromákkal, leheletnyi fehérboros lecsengéssel. Testes, közepesen szénsavas, erősen keserű. Korrekt, de nekem nem jött be.

Overall Bigfoot is just what you would expect from a Gold Medal Winner. I was recently introduced to Barley Wine over at Dry County and Sierra Nevada was my second shot at this style and was also excellent. Starting to become a real big fan of the Barley Wine style. Nice fruity bouquet; an extremely rich palate. Very well balanced.

hauxe (1024) - Butzbach, Hesse, GERMANY - SEP 17, 2017
Pours brown from the bottle. The off white head is creamy. Aroma is apple, plum, raisin, caramel. Pleasant. Taste is sweet with a mild bitterness that is particularly noticeable at the finish. Body is medium to heavy, carbonation is mild. Overall goes down dangerously easy. Good.
