This strong amber beer was first brewed in 1982 at the request of Van Steenberges Italian importer. Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2016 750 ml bottle into a trappist glass. Wow, the cork nearly took my damn head off. Pours a hazy burnt orange with a yellow/amber glow. There is a finger of frothy white head and nice lacing. Beautiful beer. Aroma is dough, barnyard yeast, banana, clove, lemons, white pepper, and sharp spices. Taste is bread, clove, banana, lemon, candi sugar, mild grassy hops, and maybe a touch of brown sugar in the end. Mouthfeel is medium to thin and very drinkable. I would guess this beer is 7%, not 10.5. So so awesome. Wow. I love this beer, amazing.

On tap. Somehow harsher on the tongue than I expected.... Or usually experience. There is a worrisome bitterness that is....unpleasant. Compared to somewhat similar Belgian beers (I know, Jack Kerouac is cringing somewhere... "All comparisons are loathsome" or something to that effect) this misses the mark a bit. Still, it has its points and is not a disaster. Lets just say I have had better. Cloudy, amber, nice foam and lacing. The aftertaste is also...unusual.

Bottle. Big head upon pouring. Sweetness dominates with a strong mouth feel. Strong presence of alcohol as you would expect. Perhaps an acquired taste but I enjoyed drinking it. Not one for lunchtimes though.

330ml bottle pours dark orange with thin off-white head. Aromas of stone fruit, yeast and candy sugar. Flavours of orange rind, sugar syrup, bready yeast, toffee, subtle spices and alcohol. Very well balanced Belgian Strong Ale with classic flavour profile.

One of the great beers. Aromas good with wet grain,, yeast, malt. Flavors super, somewhat like aroma, sweet up front tang in the middle and a little bit bitter in the finish. Add some spice and you have it.
