San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours a orange hue with a nice off white head. Aroma is citrus with orange, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Sweet maltiness aroma comes through as well. Excellent tasting IPA with a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Finishes with a nice grapefruit flavor on the tongue. The palate is smooth with the right amount of carbonation, not crisp but it doesnt need to be. Somewhat sweet but hoppy IPA. An excellent choice for a nightcap beer.

CAN 12 OZ courtesy of solidfunk. Almost clear amber, off-white head. Big grapefruit nose, lots of citrus peel, but no harsher pine or resins. Similar flavour - the sweetness is more like a ripe pink grapefruit than malts proper, clean pungent but not overly aggressive citrus peel bitterness. Some more sweet citrus fruitiness in the after taste. Very good.

Bottle from Beergium.com - could not find the "bottled on" date :/

Aroma: very delicate, not to say week, fruity aroma and some underlying caramel

Looks: clear gold with medium white head with good retention

Taste: mid dry, caramel with some hoppy bitterness. Bitter rather short and malty finish.

Feel: mid carbonated, mid full body

Overall: Ok as an everyday beer but nothing special about it. By all the hype about it I was expecting way more. I guess the bottle could have been old :/ will have to try it fresh sometime...

Yes--I know people dont like that Ballast Point was acquired by Constellation and yes, my palate has evolved in the years since this beauty was first released, having tasted countless other IPAs. To hell with that---Sculpin is still THE great San Diego IPA and became so by hitting that illusive sweet spot of not being too strong and bitter to turn off the non hop heads and enough citrus and fruitiness to appeal to women and novices. If you were to try one San Diego IPA as your benchmark for my home towns best known style--it would be Sculpin, bar none

1 finger white head that dissipates quickly. Clear, amber coloured beer. Aroma is mango, orange and grapefruit. Hint of kiwi aswell. Explosion of bitterness almost right away. Soapy, grassy and grapefruity bitterness with a quite boozy aftertaste. Not much fruit in the actual taste which I prefer but still works. Always thought this one was overrated when I started drinking craftbeer but its a well made IPA for the IBU maniacs out there. Quite thin but still a bit sticky and its really big for a 7% ABV beer. Feels like a DIPA. Good stuff!

355ml can from Dan Murphys (BB 8/17). Quite light coloured for an IPA with a clear bright golden body and an ample sized fluffy lasting white head with nice lace rings. I get peach, mango, grapefruit and subtle pine needles on the nose. Plenty of juicy fruity hops on the tongue with a long lingering dry hop bitterness. Sweetish cereal malt base is there at the beginning. Overall more stonefruity than resinous, unlike other classical US West Coast IPAs I could mention.
