A dark brown porter with a thick brown head. In aroma, a good chocolate with grassy hops, coffee and toffee. In mouth, a delicious sweet mocha chocolate with herbal hops, caramel notes, well balanced. cubs (10635) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 22, 2013
Tap @ Piece in Chicago with TheAlum. Pours a dark brown appearance with a brown head. A touch smoky, dark chocolate, vanilla, a touch fruity aroma. Light coconut, roasty, slightly smoky, dark chocolate flavor. Nice beer. hombrepalo (1971) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 19, 2013
Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized light brown head. Aroma was some chocolate, with roasted malts, and dark fruits. Flavor was light roasted malts, chocolate, with some bitterness. Pretty enjoyable. Pailhead (6540) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - MAY 10, 2011
On tap: The aroma consists of dark chocolate, light smoke, and coffee. It’s a dark brown with a one finger tan head with good retention. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and butterscotch. The butterscotch lingers throughout. The finish has some fruitiness, a touch of smoke and roast. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and soft mouthfeel.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a dark blackish hue, near opaque with some brownish glowing edges. A decent frothy tannish head dies to a ring and laces small, clinging as a film. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate and touches of anise. Some more black licorice, coffee grounds, and touches of roast, toast, and toffee. Initial is fuller bodied, a full coffee and anise feel with roasted barley, toffee sweetness and caramel, touches of cocoa, both sweet and bitter, some molasses. Sweet and thicker, a heavy porter that brings a complex vibe, full bodied feel, and a lot of sweetness. The anise actually works well here, good roast and sweetness. A solid Porter, a bit bigger. Chocolate comes in much fuller as it warms, turning sweeter and roasty with just a light kiss of smokiness dancing in the finish and front of the palate at the end. Mmmmmm. chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 27, 2011
I had this on tap into a tasting glass at Piece. The beer is a very dark black, hardly any brown highlights. Light tan ok retention. The aroma is super sweet a hint of vanilla and chocolate with a big smokey finish. They say only light smoke but not the case at all. The taste is all about the smoke its everywhere and dominating and only shows anything else on the finish where you get a little sweetness. Light black licorice as well. This is ok, nothing special but if you want a little smoke while your out not a terrible choice. However, they have schlenkerla there so I’d go with that. On tap at the brewpub. Poured black wit ha wooden brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Flavor was full of roasted malts with a bit of smoke and dark bread underlying. Flavor started with dark grains and a bit of sweet chocolate, but became much more roasty with even a bit of smoke growing into the finish. Roonai (305) - - FEB 6, 2011
Tap at Piece. Poured black with a deep amber edge and white head. Smell was a boozy roast with a hint of dark fruits... definitely got my mouth watering. Taste was roasty with a maple and dark fruit sweetness that blended well.
