Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

KapitiCritique's rating

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 5/5   OVERALL 18/20

Nose is very much molasses, very strong, like I am actually smelling molasses, there are some roasted grains evident as well, reminiscent of Highland Park 12-Year Old Single Malt, it gets smokier as it approaches room temperature; pours black tar with a hint of green, totally opaque, thick but no head to speak of and the lacing is translucent but very thick. May have been chilled too long; Taste is very big, very strong slightly sweet, and tart, sour finish, sprightly carbonation but it is fading fast; Palate is heavy, good carbonation, textrue is thick, oily, sticky and creamy - go figure; OVERALL; Overpriced. And, at this price I’d rather have the Highland Park. But, it is very good. Next time I will try this room temperature. I hear the head is impressive

33cl Bottle @ LaBIRRAtorium, Madrid, Spain Black colour with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, oak, whiskey. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, sweet, molasses, raisins, licorice, oak, whiskey. Full body, soft carbonation.

Bootlegger007 (167) - AUSTRALIA - JUL 23, 2017
Aroma of earthy peat malt and caramel, pours black with a thin tan head, medium body and soft carbonation, I found this ale well refined and very enjoyable, smooth and warming.

Color negro con capa de espuma marrón de dos dedos de grosor (retención decente). Carbonatación inexistente. Textura oleosa y algo untuosa (buen cuerpo, pese a que esperaba más). Aroma ahumado, a cacao, pasas, vainilla, ligerísimo licor.

W zapachu karmel, czekolada, figi, rodzynki, wanilia. W smaku czekolada, karmel, drewno, wanilia, rodzynki, paloność. Goryczka niska, wysycenie niskie, posmak karmelowy, palony.

ForlornHope (523) - Hampshire, ENGLAND - JUN 12, 2017
Bottle at home. Opaque black with a thin tan head. Complex aroma of tar, fruit, old tobacco and a hint of wood. Tastes bitter - very bitter. Peaty, woody, fruity and tar-like with a dry finish and a hint of smooth vanilla. Definitely a hint of whisky. Complex, interesting and worth trying.

MrOrla (3215) - Odense C, DENMARK - MAY 20, 2017
Bottle. Pours almost black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, heavy licorice, dry Barre l, slight phenolic, loads of wood. Fruity with loads of barrel, fruity and quite dry.

jooilakon (170) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 12, 2017
UPDATED: MAY 25, 2017 330 ml bottle from Amazon. Aroma is sweet with smoky whisky tones and hints of caramel/chocolate and coffee. Dark beige head and black body. Taste is sweet with caramel tones and smoky whisky, and there is a subtle wooden taste as well. Leaves a long, smoky aftertaste. A very rich beer overall. One is enough for sure.

OminouSC2 (673) - Mora, SWEDEN - MAY 10, 2017
Black color, small brown head. Sweet aromas of caramel, ’kolasnören’, raisins, wood, syrup, slight smoke and chocolate. Taste of caramel, wood, whisky, salt, smoke, chocolate and roasted malt. Really good.

bobroman (1169) - Torun, POLAND - MAY 9, 2017
Tasted on 31.03.15. Intensive aroma of chocolate and liqueur candies. Small head disappearing to ring. Almost completely black colour. Complex taste of dark chocolate and liqueur candies. Great hoppy and roasted bitterness perfectly balances sweetness.
