4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle, 13 April 2011. Pours clear deep reddish brown with a large creamy brown head that diminishes slowly and leaves great, thick lacing in its wake. Aroma is strong dark roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, kahlua, molasses. Flavor is quite sweet, all of the above plus a bit of sprucy hops leading to a light bitter, warming alcoholic finish. Full bodied and thick. Very very good.

This 33cl bottle came home with me from a trip to Amsterdam. Drained into a tulip glass it is blacker than a banker’s heart. It leaves a super dark-tan head that refuses to disappear. The nose is swell, toffee, vanilla, something herbal. Then a taste, damn is it good. Complex. Dark chocolate of course, heavy malt, a touch of brown sugar, all with a strong hoppy bitterness. Speedway Stout is good, so is Abyss. This is right with them. Hope I get to see it again. CraftyHare (79) - Adelaide, AUSTRALIA - JUL 14, 2017
330ml bottle pours opaque dark brown with slow forming tan head. Aromas of espresso, barley malt and dark cocoa. Tastes of coffee liqueur, chocolate, roasted malt, barley malt, brown sugar, molasses, stone fruit and oak. Deep body and syrupy texture. Finish is sweet with a little espresso bitterness. A real classic! Bootlegger007 (167) - AUSTRALIA - JUL 10, 2017
Love it, a real pleasure to experience. Strong aromas of roasted malts, caramel, coffee and chocolate, pours black as night with a small and diminishing tan head, starts with a sweet caramel flavour finishing off with a lingering bitterness, full body, soft carbonation, a sensational warming feeling. Apparently a long time ago since I had the regular version, because I never rated it. Fairly fresh bottle. Pitch black color. dense brown head with some retention. Aroma’s: hard roasted malts, ground coffee, along with light sweetness and light red fruit retronasal. Flavor is light sweet, with roasted bitterness, dark chocolate. Over medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Long finish with lots of roast and fairly bitter. Classic stuff.

De Molen’s classic, English-inspired RIS, in existence since 2008 and though I had several barrel aged variants of this, apparently this basic version has somehow escaped my attention so far - so I jumped to the opportunity to taste it from a bottle at one of Amsterdam’s Gollems. Thick, very dense and frothy, brownish-tinged beige head over a jet black beer. Lovely, classic and intense RIS aroma of bitter chocolate, hazelnut oil, cappuccino, ’Maggi’ and beef stock, ’haemoglobin’ iron, coffee grounds, bayleaf, cinnamon, dried figs, old raisins, brandy, pipe tobacco and a hint of raw green kale. Candied sweetish onset, fig and raisin, fairly strong but inoffensive umami character of beef stock and cured meat, sourish roasted barley undercurrent, soft carbo, thick and very viscous, oily mouthfeel. Black bitter chocolate, toasted brown bread and toasted nuts fill the mouth, turning into strong coffee-like roasted bitterness towards the end with even a slightly ashy side note; the dried fruit sweetishness lingers on top of this roasted bitterness, but is eventually overshadowed by it, aided by a tail of peppery, spicy hop bitterness and very noticeable, but well-placed whisky-ish alcohol warmth. World class imperial stout, clearly, and as expected. SvanteL (549) - SWEDEN - JUN 25, 2017
Pretty sweet aroma also with some dark stone fruit and chocolate. Taste is more towards chocolate and even ashiness from the hops, but the fullness of the body balances things. Quite good. diabel (1714) - Aarschot, BELGIUM - JUN 17, 2017
Aroma of smokey chocolate malts. Deep black body, high viscosity. Deep dark head, creamy. Moderately bitter, moderately sweet flavour. Impressing. Very well balanced. Samtzu (450) - Palmerston North, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 7, 2017
Tap pour at Hashigo Zake from an aged keg. Pours a deep black with small amounts of brown head. Faint yet powerful aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. Medium body with a full chocolate backbone with notes of alcohol and fruit.
