COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Bottle from South Bay. Let this one warm up. Poured jet black with an impressive thick, creamy tan head. Sticky lacing. Heavy chocolate and roasted malt nose. Smoke, leather, oak, some bourbon, and oats as well. Velvety smooth mouthfeel with light carbonation. Love how it coats your mouth. Bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt hits you first. More sweet than bitter, but held in check. Rich coffee flavor (without the acidity), anise, caramel, and creamy milk-chocolate flavors come through. Hints of bourbon and an earthy smokiness pop occasionally. No soy sauce or wooden flavors, just a thick, lovely stout. The alcohol is well masked, but gives a pleasant warmth. Please brew more of this.

12oz bottled 8/18/2017 11.8% ABV 32 IBU poured into pilsner glass pitch black like a soda with carbonation, but no head or lacing whatsoever. vanilla cream soda and whiskey over chocolate and espresso, extremely alcoholic with burn and buzz, not noticing any bitter hops. Little disappointed on my first bottle, but perhaps a bit over-hyped and my expectation were too high. I like whiskey and and enjoyed the beer, but I could maybe add a little whiskey to a cheaper stout with similar results. Note: I will stick with my initial review even though bottles in this 4-pak were inconsistent, one had no head or lace, two had small head which dissipated quickly leaving small amount of lacing and one had a nice 2-finger head which took nearly half hour to dissipate leaving plenty of lacing on the glass. All were poured the same, straight from the fridge down the center of a pilsner glass. The other three beers were not as much cream soda as initial review, but otherwise similar in taste. Have never experienced such inconsistency in a pack of beer before.

I've had several different beers from Boulevard Brewing Company. This Whiskey Barrel Stout is one of my new favorites. It is not what I would drink for all occasions, just when I feel like something to savor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2011 bottle. Aroma of light oxidated, sherry, light whiskey, roasted malt, chocolate. Black with tan head. Taste is slight booze, light bitter and light sweet. Full body, oily feel and sherry and chocolate finish.

Tap. Pours black with a small light brown head. Aromas of whiskey, vanilla, dark fruits, fudge, light oxidized, malt. Taste has dark chocolate, dark fruits, light oxidized, fudge, light roast, some bitterness, coffee.

Bottle from Bottlecraft in San Diego, CA. Aroma is roasted malts, caramel, cocoa, cocoa cereal, cherry, vanilla. Taste is sweet vanilla, dark fruits, smooth bourbon with a mild boozy bitter finish. Alcohol is really well hidden at 11.8%.

Pours a dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is wood, burnt roast, and chocolate. Flavor is whiskey, wood, chocolate, and some dark fruit. Has a smooth, full body. Very good.

Bottle at home. Three year old. Pours a black colour with a small light beige head. Aroma with lots of chocolate truffles, coffee beans, whisky, wood and some smoke. The flavour follows up and mirrors the aroma. Rich and silky mouth feel, full-bodied and a light bitterness. A well-balanced IS with lots of chocolate.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 8/18/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/pepper, herbal, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, and dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, pepper, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light herbal hop/roast bitterness and yeast/whiskey/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, dark bread, light smoke/dark fruits, ans roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and no cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is awesome. Slightly chalky, tannic, and drying. Alcohol is very well hidden; a very mildly warmth, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Very rich with perfectly integrated whiskey barrels and great malt complexity. Nice complementing yeast notes that aren't overwhelming. Very smooth/silky mouthfeel from the barrel aging. A highly enjoyable offering.

Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/roasted malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, date, fig, licorice, molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, bourbon, oak, vanilla, clove, pepper, light char, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, licorice, molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, bourbon, oak, vanilla, pepper, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/roasted malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance with the yeast notes and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible Belgian imperial stout style. All around awesome complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/roasted malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours a black color with tan head. Whiskey, molasses, roasty, slight cocoa aromas. A bit metallic in the aromas also. Whiskey, oak, chocolate, molasses, vanilla flavors. It's been awhile since I've bought a whiskey barrel aged beer. Not bad!

Bottle. Pours a black color with tan head. Burnt, coffee, oak, roasty aromas. Whiskey, vanilla, oak, roasty, chocolate flavors. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. Pretty good overall, but there’s better imperial stouts out there. I have a bottle of the infected 2011 version of this beer that I would like to try against a normal version sometime.

Updated raing: Going to bump this up to a little from by last rating. Very solid imperial stout.
