Bottle: Deep golden, unclear, slowly collapsing medium-sized off-white head, moderate grainy-toasty nose, some "woody" hoppy traces in the background; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, chewy MF; slightly lingering sweetish-toasty finish with a delicate hoppy aftertaste. Not very aromatic, but all in all a well drinkable, chewy brew… MoritzF (9851) - Ottobrunn, GERMANY - JUN 30, 2013
(swing top bottle) Almost clear, amber to copper colour with a big and slightly off-white foamy head. Strawy and slightly cara-malty aroma with a faintly hoppy background. Moderately sweet and slightly bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Cara-malt upfront with strawy and slightly bready spots, also doughy notes; hops shine through towards the still very malty finish with a present touch of caramel in the aftertaste. Still the typical German Festbier/Märzen of a slightly darker kind.
Quack-Duck (9484) - Down South, GERMANY - JUN 23, 2013

Brauerei Engelbräu’s Wertacher Marktbier. I was looking to try a Märzen, and this one was one of the few in a Bülgelverschluß (plop-tops), which I reuse for my homebrew, in the Märzen category at Biershop-bayern.
Color is dark golden with some orange tints. A dirty white head foam that quickly disappeared. Aroma is strong Müncher and Pils malt, very aromatic, with just a hint of hops. Basically, it smells like a typical Bayrisches beer. They say it’s unfiltered, but it’s clear as a bell.
The taste is also typical, but it tastes almost exactly the way its aroma promises. Flavor is very malty, sweet, not like a Dunkeles, less caramel, nonetheless a malty sweetness is there. More pronounced is a Tettnanger or Hallertauer, or Spalter hop spicy, lightly peppery, some bitterness. Overall, a good beer, rather typical, though. I’m not sure if all Märzen taste like this one, but what I like is the spiciness, light pepper with underlying malty sweetness, a sweetness that is strongest especially in the aftertaste. I wouldn’t buy it again but I recommend it. I’d rather try other Märzens to see how they compare.
