Dark brown pour big tan head that stays, laces. Aroma of lactic tang, leather, wood, smoke. Pretty close to a traditional stout in flavor but a little sour. Rye spicy flavor. Mid body. Dry finish. Cardamom is not noticeable. Good with sausage. 5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - JAN 26, 2014
Bottle: Deep brown, cola hues, thin frothy beige head, spotty lacing. Soft roasted malt nose, but also a bit spicy. Is that the cardamom? Very interesting, and very Autumn like. Tart up front, is that expected? Followed by some soft roasted malts. Spices are gone at this point. This beer cannot be busted after only 3 months can it? Body and mouthfeel are thin to moderate. As a base beer the stout is light, without much character, and lacking in depth. The spices I got on the nose are not there, the body is lacking. FFS, all these different Epic Beers are hit or miss, either really interesting or really lacking. This one is towards the lacking end, especially for a stout. FOR F*** SAKES!
