Bottle shared at a Portland BA/RB tasting... Poured dark brown with a beige head. An interesting brew which gave off a lot chalky, coffee, and roasted tones. A nice earthiness to round it out for balance. BillKismet (4064) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 5, 2010
Molasses brown-black with light chocolate cream that covers half the top. Thick portabella steak-like meatiness of a stout aroma with notes of charcoal. Deep, robust earthiness. Creamy and profoundly roasty with, again, a portabella steak finish with touches of Worcesters sauce. Outstanding, flavor and full-bodied. A top-notch grill out beer. UPDATED: MAY 24, 2012 Bottle at Dans. Poured a deep brown, with a khaki head and a ton floaters in there. Smell is chocolate, roasted coffee, earthy, some dark fruit, and tanginess. Taste is earthy, some chocolate, light tobacco, dark fruit, and molasses. Palate is thick with medium carbonation. Overall, pretty well-balanced and drinks a lot like a stout. Not picking up much of the mushrooms, but I do think they are contributing a lot to the earthiness. WeeHeavySD (3387) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 26, 2010

22oz bottle most likely from tom.... pours a deep ruddy cola pour with a lighter reddish edges and topped with a thin light beige head... aroma is earthy, musty, with a big roasty chocolate component to it. more akin to a roasty porter/stout. not sure if you’d be able to detect the fungi otherwise... flavors are a continuation of the same with roast, cocoa, and a backend that is more along the herbal musty front certainly attributed to the shitakes. semi-sweet and chalky in nature. light to medium bodied with an equal level of carbonation. earthy, semi-sweet finish.

Bomber. Clear and dark, the body sports a reddish chestnut tint with a thin, dissipating cap of khaki foam. The head leaves virtually no lacing behind. Aromas are weird and seemingly off, showing hints of citrusy tartness amidst a base of dry cocoa, caramel sugar, stewed mushrooms, and earthy dirt. Flavors follow suit, dry and chocolaty, touching on caramel and riddled with this strange, earthy, dirty mushroom component. Again, an odd, almost lemony tartness seems entirely misplaced. Sporting soft but lively carbonation, the palate starts out creamy but quickly moves on to a chalky, powdery, dry finish. A hint of tobacco comes through at the very end. This one is as odd as they come, and not in a good way. SrSilliGose (3331) - pouring bus, New Brunswick, CANADA - SEP 11, 2010
bottle. pours a hazy dark brown with a small tan head. initial aroma is like a belgian stout. quite earthy. some light chawky dry cocoa. grainy, but goes down smooth. a chawky, dry, earthy, musty belgian stout that leaves some nice roast character in mouth. mushrooms transformed into earthy, muddied, must. better than expected. 12oz bottle. Rating #56. Rich dark brown almost black pour with a small tan head. Big dark roasted coffee aroma with a little bitter chocolate. Interesting flavor, more roast with a lot if earthiness as well and more coffee. Not bad. (1999) PhillyBeer2112 (2850) - Oviedo, Florida, USA - JUL 18, 2010
