COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A beast of a brew. This dark, rich hearty ale is made with shiitake mushrooms, adding umami soaked earthiness unique to this beer. Brewed with a balanced blend of roasted barley and oats, the mouthfeel is truly narrative. Both complex and straight-forward, this ale is equally at home with a hearty fresh off the grill steak or a late night game of poker.

Deep black with tan head. Aroma is earthy and lightly roasted. Flavor is up front roastiness and the shiitakes really do add to the body and earthiness of the brew. Not really a porter, a stout but a combo of the two with an earthiness not noticed in either. Something new and interesting. I really like what this guy is doing. A great way to end a Sunday evening. Very bright and lightly estringent on the finish. Fun stuff.

Sweet on the nose. Expecting a sweet flavor, but it yields to more of an earthy, tangy mushroom flavor. Lingering roastiness. I wasnt going to rate tonight, but this beer pulled me in to it. Its not that it is the greatest beer ever, but its different.

Received 22-oz bottle via trade with 5000. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with plenty of particles in the beer, yet holds a beige head that dissipates to a fine film top. Aroma of Shiitake mushrooms, some oysters in a shell, earthy herbs, and a hint of chocolate malt. Taste is medium to full bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of chocolate malt, floral hops and some dried Shiitake mushrooms. Finish is malty with plenty of floral hops with not so much bitterness.

bottle. pours a hazy dark brown with a small tan head. initial aroma is like a belgian stout. quite earthy. some light chawky dry cocoa. grainy, but goes down smooth. a chawky, dry, earthy, musty belgian stout that leaves some nice roast character in mouth. mushrooms transformed into earthy, muddied, must. better than expected.

Pours a deep brown with no appreciable head, light earthy aroma. Meaty brown ale malting, thick body, lovely earthy flavour which, although not specifically shitake-esque, is believably mushroomy, and makes me wish I had the steak referenced in the official description. Nice body and moderate carbonation. Sessionable, oddly enough. Yum.

12oz bottle. Rating #56. Rich dark brown almost black pour with a small tan head. Big dark roasted coffee aroma with a little bitter chocolate. Interesting flavor, more roast with a lot if earthiness as well and more coffee. Not bad. (1999)

650ml bottle pours almost black in color with a finger of beige head that leaves only a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate with some earthy notes and traces of coffee. Taste is roasted malty bitterness with some chocolately sweetness and a earthy hop bitterness. Medium body and soft carbonation. This is one of my favorites from this brewery so far. Nicely balanced and well done.
