All of us here at Epic are happy to introduce the newest exponential libation—Blue Law Porter. This is a medium-bodied porter to which we added blackberry puree at the end of primary fermentation and finished it with spruce tip extract harvested from Blue Spruce trees found on the grounds of Utah’s State Capitol building. It has a roasting profile with a fruity tartness and an aftertaste of resinous spruce.

After reading reviews I was expecting just a light berry taste. I am getting overwhelming jam taste. Light porter, don’t really get the spruce on it. Towards the very end I am getting a bit of a burnt taste, but overwhelmingly very berry flavored. Hideout’s Blueberry cobbler was better.

Release #1.
Appearance: Even through the darkest light the center of this appears black, the edges are a deep purple to garnet hued though with some sediment showing. The head is short, quickly forming a thin tan coating with a bubbly edge.
Aroma: The aroma smells a bit of jam with a dash of pine needles. The aroma is weak and fruity mostly, not appealing or painful.
Taste: Very slight chocolate upfront and throughout with a dash of fruitiness and pine on the finish lingering a minute. Nothing bold, very light in flavor. The chocolate malts show through more as I drink it, but this is a bit watery. The finish is sort of piney, sort of metallic.
Palate: A bit watery with light carbonation.
Overall: A very meh porter. I see that the second release was higher in ABV so maybe Epic saw that this was too thin also? Very thin and lacking in much character. It’s inoffensive, but it’s nothing I would want to drink again in this state.

Blueberry flavor was excellent. Didn’t catch the spruce. Minor roast contribution. Three cheers for Epic’s innovations!

Nice. Strong blackberry infused flavor. Port base is good. Surprisingly carbonated -- a fizzy pour. Slightly tart; nor sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Black with a fizzy tan head. Sweet milk chocolate and roasted grain aroma. Silky bright medium bodied palate. Tastes of milk chocolate, cherry, citrus, and vanilla with a malty finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with beige head leaving spotty lacing. Aroma is bready malt and faint blueberry. Thin mouthfeel with tangy berry and resin. Decent.

Bottle v1:   Deep cola, thin frothy tannish head, little lacing.   Roasted malts, ashy, charred wood on the nose.   Faint spruce tip, but not much in the way of blackberries.   Minor dark chocolate, or bakers chocolate.   Ashy, very ashy, roasted malts, light bitterness, bakers chocolate.   Not too bitter, not all that malty.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   A little astringent on the finish.   Not a very clean example.   Wished it had more blackberries.

Black with a tan head. Light lacing with a film of retention. Nose of light roast, chocolate, blackberry and some roasty sourness. Tastes of blackberry and/or blueberry extract, dark chocolate, light candy sweetness and dries out on the backend. Medium feel, medium body, and a light sourness.

Pours a rich black with a nice persistent head. Nice lacing. Lots of berries on the nose and flavor. Too sweet though. Very sweet.

On tap @ Malibu Sundowner. Dark brown, just about black, with a khaki head. Interesting nose. Definitely get some berries which add a light tartness. Herbal pine and spruce, roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Mild caramel sweetness. Flavor is roast, berries, and herbs. Decent amount of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. A hint of ash, light sweetness, and a dry finish. Interesting, but not bad.
