Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and roasted malts. Slight hint of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is sweet as well with so roasted malts. Only a small hint of some alcohol warming as well. Nsanders (1190) - St Paul, Minnesota, USA - FEB 7, 2013
Deep red brown with a thick khaki head. Aroma is malty, pine, with very mellow sugar and berry in the background. Taste is sweet, sour, bitter, all in quick succession. It has a soapy water consistency. The spruce seemed much more dominant than the blackberries, it would be interesting to try a version of this less the spruce. Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that was mostly lasting and good lacing. Moderate roasted coffee and sweet resin aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium roasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Bomber from Hayduke and shared with him via facebook chat. Release #1 and 5.9 ABV. A lot of red is with the dark brown during the pour. A one finger tan head. This smells like a berry cobbler with big malts. That berry fruit is tasted throughout and the roasted malts and chocolate malts work nicely. The spruce is tasted and adds a spiciness. Ron spotted this. Citrusy hops. The finish was a little thin and the fruit came out even more and then the last sip brought more chocolate.

22 oz. bottle ( release #2 7.0 abv.) Pours brown with a reddish tint and little soapy off white head. Aroma has roasted malt and earthy scents along with some subtle berry notes. Taste is more roasted malt and bitterness with the blueberries showing more in the taste. Palate is thin with a chalky dry finish. Decent, but nothing I would go out and get again. 22oz bomber pours mahogany with a loose tan head of foam. The aroma is a little blueberry esters, a little dusty nuttiness, a mineral note and just a dash of roasted malts. The taste is similar where I get a sliver of sweet dark fruity esters mixing with a mildly tart note, some nuttiness and then roasted malts. Into the finish some highly roasted malts join in too. There seems to be an off flavor too that’s sort of tartness or maybe a light astringency that is a tad off putting. OK, the label states Spruce Tips, maybe that’s what’s going on. Dark brown pour, light brown head. Roasted malts, resinous flavors, some interesting dark fruity notes, a hint of cocoa and maybe a tart note. A bit of coffee as well. ekoerper (599) - Iowa, USA - JAN 22, 2013
Bottle, release #2. Aroma: coffee, roast malts, some biscuit, berry notes, a touch of pine, bit of chocolate.
Appearance: pours black, fairly dark but not opaque, nice khaki head with good retention and lots of lacing.
Flavor: coffee, roast, and chocolate hit first, followed by berry and hints of pine. Toasty malt notes, a bit of sweetness, bitterness is low but sufficient to provide some balance. Interesting blend of flavors.
Palate: medium body and carbonation, smooth.
Overall: decent porter.
