3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
As dark as sin with a lively caramel head that left excellent lace behind in the glass. I’m intrigued to find resinous Pacific NW hop aroma rather than bold caramel and chocolate. The more I think of it, the more I like that the status quo is being pushed, but we’ll see if this translate to a rating typical of those preceding this one. Flavours initially of darker malts, burnt grain and sprucy hops. Does it go well together? I don’t think it doesn’t. It doesn’t adopt the Epic philosophy of grasping your tastebuds and giving your head a bloody good rattle but I think the combination works rather well. There’s balance and subtlety (and I hope this doesn’t make Luke Nicholas’ head explode for my writing it). I’m getting ripe apricots, spruce and bitterness along with dark chocolate and cocoa and it isn’t unwelcome on my palate. The flavour is lasting and brings out the sprucy hops toward the finish.
I would ask why this hasn’t been done in greater measure before or are we all a little bit precious about what stout should be? This stout is silky and not shy on flavour, so what is the problem?

Ebony pour with a dark cinnamon-colored head. Deep, rich, chocolate-covered coffee bean accompanied by molasses, ash, and vanilla. Quite complex, particularly given the lower than traditional ABV.
