Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Clear golden with a thin sticky white head. Has a strong Brett yeast aroma, yet with a gentle sweetness, blonde malts and dust. Flavor is big and blonde malty, semi-sweet, with a bit of a spicy undertone. Loads of funky dry Bretty yeast throughout. Barnyard notes, peach and dry white wine dominate. Dry earthy Brett finish.

750ml release #3. Pours a nice golden color with a white head leaving minimal lacing. Aroma is tart with big waves of pear, apple, and dandelion flowers. Tatse is big funky brett, tart and wonderful. This beer is awesome, I love Brett though so this was right up my alley.

Bottle (release #4, 9.1% ABV, SLC #1397) poured into a tulip. Pours a clear light golden yellow with almost a finger off-white head. Nice amount of carbonation streaming up the glass. Brett, funk, tropical fruit, pear on the nose. On the taste, big Brett notes, funk, slightly tart, pear, some wine and oak. Crisp and refreshing with a medium body and dry finish.

Release #3 bottle, because Epic is in WI now...yes! - Pours deep golden with a filmy ring of white head. Nose is plasticy apple juice and white grape, lightly funky and tart, with a bit of citrus and florals. Taste has the same apple/white grape fruitiness with a gentle funky plastic note and a bit of oakiness in the finish. Bitter apple peel on the finish. Pretty quenching and really easy to drink for 9.3%. Thinnish and medium-carbonation. Yay for Epic coming to WI!

22oz bottle - release 3. Poured a golden color with a smaller sized head. Brett, funky, citrus, fruity, some manure/barnyard (aromas), and grassy.

On tap at Beer Mongers. This is a great winey brett beer. Tart, dry winey apples, crisp and refreshing- enough body on it as well. A beautiful beer to boot, clear and golden. Epic is a fifty/fifty brewery for me- half their beers are home runs and half are duds. This one has a lot of finesse on it and that higher ABV really makes it great and well rounded. Cheers to Utah beer!

From release #3, 9.3% ABV. Pours a perfectly clear yellow-golden color with minimal head that disappeared almost immediately. Smell is the usual brett funk with a little apple vinegar. Taste is crisp with the brett funk and minor apple notes. Overall a good beer for a fix if you’re jonesin’ for the brett.

Bottle. Golden pour with hint of apple juice. White wine notes, great tart and funkiness. Substantial bretty bandaid notes. Green apple, white wine. Acidic tartness. Really good

pineypower (3347) - Ocean County, New Jersey, USA - JAN 2, 2014
Bottle. Pours out an apple juice-like golden color with a small white head. Aroma is of funky brett, light fruity notes, apple, horse blanket, nice light tartness, mild plastic. Taste is complex, apple, light spices, some funky barnyard/horse blanket brett notes, light plastic, grapes, some more funky brett, light fruity notes. Interesting beer, of course I dig it.

Someone had been drinking when these notes were taken. Aroma of Brett. Taste of caramel Brett and sour.
