Black, opaque and incredibly rich, Jonas Porter teeters on the edge between a porter and a stout. Much like a bittersweet, chocolate brownie in a glass. A hint of coffee sharpness helps maintain balance. Willamette hops in the finish add a subtle citrus aroma.

BlackForestCO's rating

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20
BlackForestCO (978) - Aurora, Colorado, USA - JAN 23, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin, dense tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and a light earthy hoppiness with a touch of citrus. Smooth, sweet entry with a touch of citrus tartness and some chocolate malt leads into a light earthy hoppiness that transitions into a moderate roasty coffee flavor that lingers into the finish. Low carbonation, but a nice sharpness and hoppiness contribute to an overall balanced palate. Overall, it was an interesting mix of typical porter flavors and more fruity hops. It was almost like a toned down version of Three Floyds Alpha Klaus, although not nearly as hop forward.

Pour on tap at the brewpub, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought dark fruit, roast, coffee, lots of acidic malts go into some caramel, toffee, slight earthy tones with a hint of dark chocolate. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, roast, lots of acidic malts with coffee, hints of dark fruit, caramel, slight earth and spice, finishing bitter.

Sampled at the brewery. Opaque, big roast notes, chocolate, coffee, more like a stout. Thin bodors, dry finish.

OK. Flavors were good but it lost on style points. Roasted aroma, which was nice. The color was a dark brown with some light making it through with a small white head. The palate was watery, which is how I find the majority of their beers. They just need to be amped up a bit. Flavors were pretty solid with more roasted grain flavors followed by a grain essence. Mild hop bitterness. Just average.

(draft 6/6/10). Black color. Medium tan head. Moderate roasted malt aroma and flavor. Long duration. Smooth finish. Thin/slick texture. Soft carbonation. Good lacing.

Nikiel (879) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 19, 2011
On tap at Equinox with Andrew, Carla and Natasha. Pours a deep black with tan foam. Smells roasty. Tastes very roasty and surprisingly bitter with less body than I’d like.
