Name changed from Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel to Erdinger Dunkel, and abv changed from 5.6% to 5.3% by 2012.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

500 ml bottle from LCBO. This is a very interesting beer, it is a wheat beer..yet it has massive dark malts of a dunkel. It pours a nearly opaque mahogany, with an absolutely massive off white head. The head lingered for the entire time I drank the beer! The aromas are of intense toffee, coffee, caramel and roasted malts. The taste is full of robust roasted malts, chocolate, and bubbling in the background is a bit of citrus...very interesting! The beer has a dry finish, and a pleasant aftertaste. This is very drinkable!

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ciemne z ładną beżową pianą. Silne aromaty słodowe, brązowego cukru i delikatna nuta banana. W smaku czuć trochę palonego słodu i skórki chleba. Trochę mocno wysycone, na finiszu lekko kwaskowe.

50 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense aromas of malts, toasted malts, caramel, spices, hints of honey, brown sugar. Hints of ripe banana as the beer got warmed. Appearance: deep brown color, quite dark but it seems very hazy. Light brown color foam with extremely high height. Super creamy foam made of tiny-to-little sized bubbles. Extremely high retention. Very low Brussels’ lacing. Taste: medium sweetness, low bitterness, no sourness. Flavors of malts, toasted malts, some caramel and bread crust, brown sugar, grains. Hints of roasted malts, dried fruits, raisins, prunes and ripe banana. The balance is toward the malt sweetness. No much hop flavors nor aromas here. Palate: medium body, watery texture, low carbonation, quite long sweet finish of malt sweetness, toasted malts, caramel, toffee, bread crust and hints of ripe banana, raisins, prunes, brown sugar and spices. Overall: good appearance, pleasant aromas and flavors of malts, toasted malts, bread crust, caramel, toffee, ripe bananas, some spices too. The malt sweetness is not cloying and it is quite drinkable. Quite watery. No hints of wheat flavors nor aromas. No hop flavors nor aromas. Very low bitterness. Just a decent beer.

Originally rated on 1/21/2009. Hints of banana, wheat and malts, Deep brown/black body witha thick taupe head that leaves decent lace. Flavor was of mild malts, and a little wheat, mouthfeel was a little watery. Overall it was o.k., but i wouldnt purchase it again.

Pleasant drink, but not exceptional. Pours frothy with lasting head, as you’d expect from a Weizen. Aroma of caramel and some banana. It’s a dark beer, clear and bright. Taste is overwhelmingly of malt, some fruit, but very little bitterness. Frothy and gassy, so full palate. Pleasant, decent, but I was slightly reminded of an alcoholic dandelion and burdock. Which is not necessarily bad. Would be good on a nice summer afternoon in a beer garden
