Lovers of strong beer need not worry that ERDINGER Weissbier Pikantus 'dark bock beer' is going to be too sweet, as is the case with so many bock beers. Despite the higher alcohol content, the Erding brew masters have succeeded in retaining the special Pikantus taste.

Bottle. Beautiful brown mud with shades of black and orange. Thick foamy head and lovely lacing. Aroma is earthy, roasty, bananas and malts. Taste is malts, chocolate, caramell, banana, dark fruits and discreetly spicy. Pleasant carbonation. Mouthfeel is a mouthful. Impressive balance between sweetness and alcoholic presence. Dangerously drinkable. Great Weizenbock.

50 cl. bottle. Hazy dark brown with a beige frothy head. Aroma is dark caramel, dark fruits, biscuit, malt, spicy hops and alcohol. Taste is light to medium sweet with light bitterness and very light sourness. It is medium bodied and oily textured with lively carbonation. Dry and somewhat bitter finish. I am a weizenbock fan but this is not exactly what I expected. Ok, it is nice but could be better.

I got this in a sampler with 5 different Erdinger products and a glass. Of the 5, this was the best one. It had a bit of sweetness and strength that reminded me of a doppelbock. Being a wheat beer, it certainly had a thick and foamy head and took a bit of patience to pour. I was well rewarded for this patience with a slightly complex and delicious beer.
