COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We brew this in early January and start selling it the following November. It takes two times as much barley and hops to make a single batch of this very strong ale. The reason wine is in the name is because of the wine-like strength of 10 % alchohol

Beaver (1871) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JAN 14, 2008
12 oz bottle. Pours a murky dark tea color with a thin off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is sweet molasses, cola and dark fruits with a little alcohol and green hops.

The flavor is sweet cola and caramel malts with dark fruits and a bitter hoppy alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium to a little thin and slightly watery (but not as bad as their other beers).

Overall, a very fine barley wine that is on the sweet side but well balanced. This is easily EP’s best brew.

Bottle at home - Tasting. Clear amber brown - offwhite head. Ryebread, barley, sweetness, honey notes, ok hoppy, caramel, amber malts. Nice.

Bottle at Theis & Mette. Hazy red brown coloured with a small off-white ehad. Sweet aroma of caramel, dried fruits and bread with notes of alcohol and hops. Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, cookies, hops and pine needles. Hoppy finish.

Aroma is caramel and malts with some vanilla. Pours a dark reddish brown with almost no head. Taste is caramel and malty sweet. Not as much alcohol taste as other barleywines. Very good.

From May 2007 Purchased from Wilbur's in Ft Collins This pours a deep amber/brown with little to no head of foam and has a tiny bit of lacing. The smell is spot on for a BWSA for me. Lots of yummy caramel malt and dark fruit hitting my nose. The taste on first sip is huge! I'm getting the big caramel that I mentioned in the smell along with some dark fruit, plum and black cherry,(light on the cherry) and a good roastiness and some grain. Further sips in and the flavours just won't quit and yeah, the 10% abv is obviously there but taking the small sips that I'm taking, it is no way near overwhelming. I'd say it's more of a soothing effect on my taste buds and I don't get a burn when it goes down. Yum. The finish is very tasty with a mix of fruit semi sweetness and a roasty bitterness. The aftertaste lingers on for what seems like forever and in this case, that's a good thing. ;^) The mouthfeel borders on thick, as in thick and chewy, where it *should* be, and the carbonation is light, also where it should be. I'm darned impressed with this BWSA, to say the least! Bottom line: This is the first brew I've tried from Estes Park Brewery and my hat is off to them for making a very true to style, abundantly flavourful, and oh so tasty sipping Barleywine Style Ale. I'd buy this again without hesitation.

2001 or 2002 bottle via a trade with ratman197. Pours with a very small head over a muddy bronze body. Aroma has tons of caramel, licorice, leather, currants, sherry and brown sugar. Taste is brown sugar, sherry and caramel. Age has been very friendly to this beer. Light bubbles.

12 oz 2004 bottle a bonus from Ratman! Thanks Don! Nose of raisin pie with some toffee and the pies yeasty crust, nose is really mellow! Very murky amber with a small beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, with an Adam old ale note. Quite a decent barleywine.

10/10/2010. Sampled at the brewery. My favorite of the beers served there. Dark brown with a tan head. Malt, dried fruit, caramel aromas with hints of alcohol. Thick and buttery, dried fruit, alcohol with light hops.
