Cask @ Wetherspoon’s Piccadilly, Manchester. Amber-red with a thin head. Malty in its nose, there’s more of a dense winter ale character in its taste with some winter fruits infused with a light spice. There’s a bitterness here too. Cask at the Moon under Water JDW, Hounslow. Red-brown with a lasting tight off-white head. Hints of sultana and a lightly tart malty aroma, as if of wood casks. Syrupy texture but with dry bitterness rather than sweetness. Warming notes of dried fruit, with hints of lemon and a juicy herbal bitterness. The Baron, 08/12/15. Clear ruby slicked loosely with white. Nose red berry fruit, a weak dusting of coffee, some fudge. Soapy red berry hand wash flavour with a turn of woody clove-like spice. Varnish and roasted nut finish. Generic red mass-produced Christmas swill: better than most Everards’ beers.

JDW, Rochester. Fragrant and flavoursome. This is a damn fine ale. White lily and nettle aroma - solid hop aroma - very fresh. Good, pale biscuit malt. Lovely. Good ingredients - plenty of them, fresh and well made. Put it all together, and wham - you got a great drinking beer, full of flavour!
