THOUGHTS: Not the best black IPA, but not awful either. Too much hop and roast bitterness & not much sweetness to balance it.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an extremely dark red that looked basically black in the glass with bright red highlights and an average, off-white head that mostly but slowly diminished and somehow left excellent lacing. The aroma was a little weak, but contained heavy roasted and burnt malts; hints of coffee and unsweetened chocolate; light to moderate pine and citrus hops; a hint of minty hops; and cola and licorice here and there. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and moderately bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderate to heavily bitter. There was roasted malt, burnt malt, pine hops, slightly citrus hops, a little licorice and cola, and hints of old coffee. The medium body was sort of creamy with very fizzy carbonation and a metallic and lightly astringent finish.

Appearance – Poured a deep brown color/ nearly black with a two finger brown head. The head fades rather slowly to give a fairly nice level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of some sweet chocolate and roasted smell mixed with a light earthy and floral aroma.
Taste – The flavor starts out of a heavy chocolate and roasted malt flavor. It is really quite pronounced and nice upfront. It starts out a little on the sweeter side, but bitters as the taste advances further with a roasted coffee and light earthy hop flavor coming to the tongue. In the end a citrus and pine hop come to the tongue. The hop flavors never get real strong and so the brew leaves only a moderately hopped and roasted taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the average side with a carbonation level that is also rather average. Not bad for either the roasted/ sweet cocoa/ hop flavors of the brew. A good compromise for all three.
Overall – A rather tasty black IPA that starts out quite sweet and roasty, developing more hop flavors as the taste advances. While not a potent IPA to say the least, it has nice flavors and is worth a try. NikkTwist (3407) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 26, 2013
Draft at Fado. Opaque black pour thar just shows as a clear dark ruby under bright light. Large foamy tan head. Decent blend of dark ashy flavors and sweet dark malts. Ashtrays. Red dried fruit. Decent amount of pine hops in the aroma, with just an underlying touch of roast. Pours an opaque dark red, with ruby highlights when held up to the light, and a thin off white head. On tap at White Dog, Philly. Nice hefty black pour, thick silken beige head. Nose is fairly appealing, with some raw-smelling hops and a fairly un-aggressive roastiness. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma has some roasty malt and charred wood. Flavor follows suit and adds layers of coffee, dark chocolate, and caramel. 12 oZ bottle: pours nearly black w a big pillowy tan head. Lots of lacing. Aroma of roasted malts citrus hops sour yeast. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish. Roast malts some chocolate sweet citrus hop finish. Smooth on the front bitter and slight sour finish.

12oz bottle-trade with jtclockwork-tight tan-black. A-roasty dk malt-dry cocoa. T-roasty dk malt that’s a bit stale-dry cocoa, 2nd earthy/pine hops.
