COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

brokensail (16645) - Dublin, California, USA - FEB 27, 2013
Dark brown colored beer with a khaki head. Moderate smoke aroma, dark fruits, and a fair amount of roast. A bit of metal, some grass, coffee, yeast, and black pepper. The flavor is lightly sweet with some fruit and bread notes. Heavy roasted malt, a fair amount of smoke, and a touch of metal. Light coffee and chocolate notes, spicy black pepper, grass, and yeast.

gorditoabd (637) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 25, 2013
12 oz from bev4less. Pours dark mahogany hue with a thin, but lacy off-white foam head. Straight away the nose is of dark malt and hops. Lots of dark bittering hops. Chocolate and coffee notes are also present. Even more coffee in the first sip, very roasty malty flavor on this one... the hop bitterness from the nose has settled into the background a bit. Is it a saison? Not so much... a black IPA? Maybe... but, of course, I’m sure the recipe grain bill and yeast would prove me wrong. Still, something about this one screams black ipa, or even robust porter. Mouthfeel is a little thin on this one, in spite of the richness of the flavor package. Clings decently well to the tongue, but on the underside. Anyway, it’s good... but not as interesting as the description made out.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a foamy off white head. Smokey, with yarn, and funk, peanuts. Slightly sour.

3.6
neuromatt (1226) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 23, 2013
12 oz bottle from Total Wine in Tucson, Arizona, served in a stem glass. Pours deep chestnut with a small tan head that fades quickly to a thin remnant and leaves a minimal amount of fine lace. On the nose, there are notes of roasted malts, smoke, pepper, grass, wheat and spice. The begins dry, with roasted malt notes, and becomes more so, with lots of spice and notes of citrus, flowers and pepper. A distinct roastiness with subtle smoke persists throughout. The finish is long, roasty and herby with a moderate hoppy bitterness. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is an interesting brew; it elegantly pairs up dark, roasted malts with saison spice. Very well done. 2012-12-29

maekchu (4054) - Hirakata, JAPAN - FEB 21, 2013
Bottle from Whole Foods El Segundo. Sugary, yeasty aroma, with a slight bit of funkiness. Dark brown with a thick creamy head. Quite balanced between the saison and the black. Some smoke, yes. Good bitterness in final. Medium body. The smoke and the saison character tend to cancel each other. Okay.

3.3
tomciccateri (1035) - Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA - FEB 19, 2013
12-ounce brown bottle. Pours an opaque black with lasting, frothy , fine-bubble tan head. Smokey aroma with confounding complexities. Full body, rich texture mouthfeel. Even dry/sweet dark malt flavor balance. Late Belgian yeast character. Slight coffee notes. Hint of roastiness. Uncategorizable. OKAY.

3.3
JStax (7173) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - FEB 19, 2013
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a dense black with a lighter khaki colored head of foam. Good Retention. Difficult to pick up much in the way of aroma, but I do pick up on some grassy and resinous hop profile. In the taste I get that grassy bitterness alongside a fruity sweetness. The smoke seems to have disappeared from this beer as it is pretty much undetectable. This isn’t a bad beer at all, it’s just not quite what I expected of it.

jonno (2911) - JAPAN - FEB 19, 2013
Rather simple and straight forward considering the 3 involved. Very soft chocolate malt and hint of smoke on the nose. Simple malt grain flavours, with some slight smokiness and a it of hops on the back end. Missing any kind of quality to stand out from the pack.

3.9
Sledutah (7834) - Utah, USA - FEB 18, 2013
12oz bottle from Country wine and spirits
Appearance: Pours black with a medium sized beige head and good lacing
Aroma: Toasted malts, saison yeast, esters, mild smoke and chocolate
Taste: Spices, yeasty, wet blanket and chocolate
Nice and tasty, I enjoyed this one.
